Staveley MWFC went through to the quarterfinals of the NCEL Cup with a convincing 2-0 victory away at Barton Town OB FC where they will now play Handsworth FC.

Over the whole 90 minutes it was hard to imagine a more one sided 2-0 victory of contrasting styles.

Barton Town, with lingering hopes of promotion rang the changes, as did Staveley with Kyle Fores-Chambers, Jordan Eagers and Tom Jones all unavailable and a couple of players not 100% fit or well. This left spaces for Callum Westney, Todd Jordan and Lee Hill.

Barton forced the first corner and were then for long spells of the first half determined to try and play the long ball to Gareth Barlow up top all alone and the channel ball was the tactic for Barton, but the Staveley back line with Joe Macguire introduced along side Ashely Foyle, Chris Fawcus and Michael Staley were dominant throughout.

After 14 minutes Staveley nearly took the lead when Joe Thornton crossed and the ball reared up quickly and the keeper could only look on as the ball came off the bar.

After 24 minutes Staveley took the lead when the ball came to Ryan Damms from the right and with nothing looking on the striker turned 22 yards out and sent an accurate left foot drive into the bottom corner of the net to give Staveley a 1-0 lead.

Aymen Tahar scored a peach of a goal in a 2-0 victory over Barton Town in the NCEL cupThe pressure was now on Barton who were struggling to get any rhythm going seemingly content to clear their lines but with all too often wasting possession with far too many long balls.

Staveley had the chance to increase their lead but Andrew Fox being one of the players not 100% well just failed to put the finishing touches to some good passing movements. Staveley had a strong claim for a penalty turned down but the referee was well placed and he played on.

With half time approaching Staveley increased their lead with what must surely rank as one of the goals of the season. Aymen Tahar (pictured) out far right, cut in beating 3 men and playing the ball into Andrew Fox whose deft pass back set up the Staveley midfielder who feinted to blast the ball goal bound but chipped the keeper from 22 yards with an absolute peach of a goal to give Staveley a commanding 2-0 cushion at the half way stage.

The second half was literally a demonstration of Staveley passing the ball around with Barton chasing shadows. A couple of rash challenges gave the referee the need to show Barton the two cautions and Staveley picked up their first caution in the last 4 games.

Chance after chance was created by Staveley with Barton hardly creating a single chance in the second half perhaps distracted by the slimmest of chances of gaining promotion but mathematically that possibility does exist for Barton.

It does seem that the Barton Town who came into the NCEL 4 years ago wanting to play the passing game have gone for the more direct route this season, but on this showing and progressively through the season it has not as yet produced the results that Barton Town hope for but there is still that outside chance of a final push for promotion and perhaps that where their focus was on the night where they were well beaten by this ever resurgent young Staveley side.

Staveley MWFC now return to league action on Saturday where they face Louth Town FC knowing a single point will crown them Champions of NCEL Division 1 after already achieving promotion last week.
