Staveley MWFC Dig Deep For Victory

NCEL Premier League fixture: Thackley FC 1 - 2 Staveley MWFC

Staveley MWFC Dig Deep For VictoryStaveley MWFC dug in deep in the second half at Thackley to protect the superiority they held in the first half, coming away with a 2-1 victory where they just about edged it over a very good Thackley side - who should be credited on their efforts - as should their ground staff on getting the game on at all!

After just 3 minutes Thackley central defender Rob Morgan badly twisted his knee in a 50/50 challenge with Chris Coy, with no blame whatsoever on the Staveley striker. He was stretchered off and an ambulance was called and the unfortunate lad is still in hospital today with badly torn knee ligaments and everyone no doubt wishes him a speedy recovery.

It was really hard going on one of the largest pitches in the NCEL with Thackley trying to use the complete width of the surface with two very quick wingers.

For Staveley's part, a 4-5-1 system was working well in the opening stages and the first danger came when Chris Fawcus popped one over the top for Andrew Fox to get into the area but Thackley's re-arranged defence cleared the danger.

Staveley, were having by far the better of the early exchanges pinging the ball around on what was a tricky surface due to the recent bad weather.

Chris Coy returning to the club where he won the Golden Boot burst through 3 or 4 challenges, but his pass was met with the offside flag.

Some neat play on the edge of the Thackley area resulted in Gavin Smith putting in a good effort that was blocked for a Staveley corner on 12 minutes.

Thackley were having to work hard to keep Staveley at bay but they did break quickly. Gavin Smith put in a good strong challenge and as the ball broke, Andy Phillip put in a bad challenge on Jordan Eagers and the Thackley midfielder should count himself lucky not to have been given a different colour card than the yellow he got from referee Jamie Waters, who officiated the game well.

The first quarter of an hour had been very much Staveley's and they had a chance to open the scoring when Chris Coy played in a great ball through to Jordan Eagers, but his attempted curler round Matthew Conley in the Thackley goal was saved.

On 17 minutes Staveley took the lead.

Andrew Fox working hard in midfield intercepted a cross field pass and headed it forward to Ryan Damms, he played in Chris Coy who passed it onto Jordan Eagers and Kyle Fores-Chambers overlapping well again - in line with the edge of the area - put in a far post corner that sailed over the keeper and into the far corner of the net for a fortuitous goal - albeit Staveley had dominated to this point.

It had took Thackley over half an hour before their first real shot on goal caused any sort of concern for the Staveley rear-guard who had performed exceptionally well and a minute later, a combination of Ian Deakin and Michael Staley denied Andy Phillip the equaliser, with some resilient defending.

Staveley went 2-0 up after 35 minutes with a more direct route than the passing game that had caused Thackley problems to date.

Gavin Smith collecting the ball in the centre of midfield played one over the Thackley back line where Jordan Eagers had made a great run, this time running on to chip the ball over Matthew Conley to give Staveley a deserved 2-0 lead.

Staveley had another chance to put the game beyond doubt when Jordan Eagers, who was excellent in the middle, played in Ryan Damms who dug the ball out of the pitch with a chip over the advancing keeper but the ball sailed over the bar.

The Thackley defence was being opened up far too easily but a combination of the final touch and the assistant linesman's raised offside flag managed to keep the score at 2-0 by the time the half time whistle went some 53 minutes after the game had started.

If Staveley had dominated the first 45 minutes then Thackley dominated the second half.

Staveley had a couple of excellent chances in the opening 15-minutes of the second half counter attacking with some menace, but Thackley were pushing and pushing the Staveley back line back onto the 18-yard line. It was 'backs to the walls' with Thackley coming at Staveley but all too often, Thackley's dominance seemed to just lack that final pass.

At the three quarter stage, Thackley did get back into the game when Ian Deakin managed to parry a powerful shot but Mark Bett pounced first to prod the ball home. It was now going to be a very challenging last quarter of the game for the visitors.

Ryan Damms was replaced with Simon Barraclough and Jason Bentley came on for Chris Coy and Ben Ferguson replaced Gavin Smith.

On 75 minutes, it was the woodwork that denied Thackley's pressure as Staveley had been pushed well back - but the substitutions seemed to steady the ship with fresh legs on the now very heavy pitch that had deteriorated through the afternoon.

Credit to the Staveley work rate and defensive qualities of all the 14-players who battled through the proceedings and who came away with 3-points to keep Staveley in the top 6 in the NCEL Premiership.

On Wednesday a scheduled Presidents Cup game at Tadcaster already looks in doubt and next Saturday there will be another massive test for both Staveley and Thackley who once again go head to head for the third time this season with Staveley currently having the bragging rights with the two victories, but no doubt Thackley will be very much up for the challenge and will want to avoid a third successive defeat.
