Win For Staveley MWFC Over Licoln Moorlands FC

Tuesday 17th January 2012
by TERRY DAMMS

Staveley MWFC did what they had to do against a Lincoln Moorlands side who for 45-minutes were stubborn opponents until the second half when they looked a well beaten side, losing 3-0 and, to be fair, it could and should have been a greater margin.

Keeper Ed Eley went in goal to make his Staveley debut - with really just the one early save to make - and Luke Forgoine made up the back 3 with a 5-2 formation in front of them.

Staveley opened up well, a ball over the left from Jordan Eagers found Joe Thornton, but his cross was well cleared by Lincoln who themselves responded down their left, a good cross going begging with no one gambling to get on the end of it.

Billy Fox enjoyed a dominant win over Licoln Moorlands and r=tried out a 3-5-2 formationLincoln had their first discussion with the referee when Luke Forgoine put a good ball over the top and, running through towards goal, Ryan Damms was clinically pulled down and the first of 4 cautions for the visitors was made by the referee.

Staveley pressed and Andrew Fox's piercing run enabled him to burst into the area and with the outside of his right foot, crossed to Simon Barraclough who just couldn't get his foot around the ball, his shot going wide.

Forgetting it was a 3-5-2 formation, Staveley pushed on leaving a back 2 and left themselves exposed causing Manager Billy Fox (left) to forcefully ask where the defenders were going and when the ball was lost, the open space was well exploited by Lincoln, a pass was put in front of the Lincoln lone striker who had a good effort tipped round the post by Ed Eley.

Staveley responded down the left when Simon Barraclough put through Joe Thornton, but his cross went behind both strikers who had gambled early - but the ball didn't go out - and was whisked back in by Jordan Eagers into the danger area only to be deflected away.

Staveley's final ball was just not there and Lincoln were able to counter attack and again, when they broke, a shot from 25-yards was deflected and scraped the outside of the post for a second Lincoln corner.

It was a caution a piece after a nothing situation threatened to boil over.

Strong tackling from Chris Fawcus was well appreciated by another crowd of over 100 and when Lincoln lost the ball, Andrew Fox played in Jordan Eagers one on one with the keeper, but his effort after rounding the keeper went agonisingly wide.

Staveley claimed a penalty when Simon Barraclough appeared to be tripped second time around after being played in but the referee was close by and waved away the appeals.

Some good work by Aymen Tahar down the left brought a Staveley corner, but the game seemed to freeze as everybody stood still, the ball bouncing around, and no one was able to prod the ball home. Lincoln surviving yet another dose of Staveley pressure.

Standing a back 5 in front of their keeper, Lincoln's tactics were to be content to sit and hope they could counter - especially with Staveley's adventurous formation.

Staveley had held the majority of the possession and the play but the final ball was unfortunately too often off target.

The second half started with instructions to 'up the tempo' and press higher up the field.

Passing the ball back, the Lincoln keeper kicked out with his weaker left foot, the ball went to Joe Thornton's weaker right foot, his goal bound effort finding the Lincoln keeper alert when he made up for his mistake by saving the ball on the goal line.

Staveley had started well pushing Moorlands well back on their heels.

On 50-minutes, Staveley at long last converted their pressure. Richard Patterson, collecting the clearance in the middle of the park, fed Joe Thornton wide, he played it into the feet of Simon Barraclough whose clever back heel found Joe Thornton running on the overlap past the back line and, from 12 yards out, the 'on fire' Staveley marksman crashed the ball into the net to give them the lead they fully deserved.

Lincoln were under a lot of pressure and they conceded another free kick and from 30 yards out, Joe Thornton went close with a corner being conceded.

The game was one way traffic. Aymen Tahar picking up a loose ball from Joe Thornton's cross into the area, floated one over the keeper's head to the far post but the ball went a little too far for Ryan Damms trying to hook the ball back.

A minute later, Staveley went close again as they began to dominate the game.

It was 2-0 on 60 minutes, Simon Barraclough taking the ball from a throw in, slipped in Aymen Tahar centrally, Tahar went right and then cut back in, beating his man and from 25 yards, a left foot rocket crashed against the woodwork. With the Lincoln keeper admiring the effort, the ball rebounded out and Joe Thornton followed up heading the ball home.

Staveley then thought they had either a penalty or 3-0, Jordan Eagers playing it into Simon Barraclough who was crudely clattered after the ball had been played but he turned it round the corner into Andrew Fox who was bursting through and when in front of the defender, looked as though he was impeded, poked the ball under the keeper who managed just to get back onto the line, again stopping the ball crossing it.

Staveley continued to dominate and Lincoln were having a torrid time getting out of their own half.

Jordan Eagers was replaced by Kyle Fores Chambers.

Joe Thornton again tried his luck from 30-yards as the killer third goal was being sought and it eventually came after a great flowing move.

Kyle Fores-Chambers played the ball into midfield to Andrew Fox on the half way line, he chested the ball down to Ryan Damms and the Staveley centre forward spread the ball out left to Joe Thornton, who cut inside seeing Andrew Fox continuing his run, he slipped the ball through and the Staveley midfielder looked calm and collected, waited for the keeper to go down and slotted the ball home on 78 minutes.

A very solid performance. Playing within themselves, the Staveley players did what they had to do - keep a clean sheet, put another 3 points on the board and make it 15 points from the last 6-league games.

That was Staveley's 35th game of the season and, with a scheduled 4 further games before the end of January, that will be 39-games in 6 months.

Those 35 games have brought 22 victories, drawing 6 and losing 7. That's 72 points from those 35 games, probably not good enough form to gain promotion, so it is still a mountain to climb for Staveley to challenge those other clubs pushing for the one promotion spot into the Evostick League.

Whereas on Boxing Day, the form guide looked poor, 3 games on and 3 straight victories, it looks much better and perhaps another 3 points on Saturday before a fortnight off league action for cup football would be most welcome.

No doubt there are much sterner tests that lie waiting in the weeks ahead in both league and cup competitions, it was still another pleasing victory for the lads and Manager Billy Fox.
