On a thoroughly horrid playing surface and a game which in all probability should not have been played, Staveley MWFC made it 4 wins on the bounce, in a run where they have scored 11-goals and conceded just 1, with 18 points from the last 21 available - it was a very convincing 2-0 victory against Selby Town FC.
Throughout the 90-minutes Selby struggled to break down Staveley, whereas the visitors continually opened up the home defence, especially in the second half, where it was a totally one sided affair, 2-0 not reflecting the dominance that Staveley held throughout the game.
Again applying a 3-5-2 formation that had produced the previous 9 points from 3 games, Manager Billy Fox (left) was content to see that same ambitious formation work well, even on an 'ice-rink' of a pitch, where possibly the higher risk strategy may have come unstuck but once again, the Manager called it right.
The game started in bright sunshine and the sound of the players boots tip tapping on the frost bound playing surface echoed around the ground.
Selby had a few attacks in the opening 15 minutes but Ed Eley was hardly troubled in the Staveley goal. Both sets of players were really struggling to keep their balance and feet on the icy pitch.
Staveley did put themselves under pressure, losing the ball and allowing Selby to break but again, the Staveley back three stood up well and hardly ever looked like they were going to concede.
Luke Forgione mopped up well after the icy conditions let Selby in and Staveley stood up well to the few corners that Selby won in the first half.
In return, Staveley threatened down the left on several occasions through Joe Thornton but Jody Barford, Selby's keeper, saved well when the Staveley marksman burst through on a one on one.
It was a real task to even stand up at times on the icy surface, but Staveley did try and pass the ball and Selby knew they had to work hard to contain Staveley's enterprising football and the home side dug in deep and grafted hard.
It was fairly well balanced after half an hour, however, slowly but surely, Staveley were building some momentum.
Moving the Selby midfield around, the home side had dropped deep playing new signing Jamie Waltham up top alone as the hosts tried to match Staveley's energy in the middle, where the 5-man midfield were beginning to dominate.
On 40 minutes, Chris Fawcus gathered the ball just inside the opposition half and fed Richard Patterson. He slipped the ball through to Jordan Eagers who had come inside, beat two men and laid it off for Ryan Damms who came bursting through the middle, he was just about to shoot when a great tackle by Matt Friend pushed the ball wide, Simon Barraclough chased the ball and a moment of madness by Jody Barford saw him trip the Staveley striker as he was running away from goal towards the corner flag.
It was something that was likely to cost Selby dear and so it proved with Ryan Damms scoring his 10th penalty and 19th goal of the season.
A first 45- minutes that had been well competed by both sides finished with Staveley going in 1-0, which on the balance of play, they marginally deserved, but Selby had fought all the way.
If the first half was marginal, the second half was very much one-sided.
Time after time, Staveley pinged the ball about moving Selby from one side to the other and creating acres of space. Work rate was there in abundance for Staveley, the very thing that had been absent against Armthorpe in the Boxing Day defeat. Every player worked their socks off to battle through the extremely dangerous playing conditions which were deteriorating by the minute as the sun went down and the air cooled.
Staveley forced two early corners and Joe Thornton had a decent effort saved.
Ed Eley did save well with an outstretched leg on 48 minutes.
Staveley went 2-0 up just two minutes after that with another goal of superb quality. Jordan Eagers put in a good challenge down the right some 40 yards from goal, passing it down the line to Simon Barraclough who played it neatly back with a great back heel, he burst into the penalty area to add numbers in the danger area, Jordan Eagers took the pass early and swung in a great cross for Ryan Damms which Selby cleared but Aymen Tahar somehow stretched his leg back and gathered the ball, playing it into Simon Barraclough some 15-yards out who curled a stunning finish into the top right hand corner, much to the delight of the Staveley followers.
Selby did not lose their heads - nor did they let their heads drop - but it was hard to remember a single shot on goal after the second goal went in.
On the other hand, Staveley could have doubled their goal tally.
Joe Thornton breaking down the left put in a superb cross, bouncing once, Simon Barraclough got his head to it but Jody Barford saved.
Staveley were really playing some decent stuff and, given the icy surface, the standard was exceptional.
Billy Fox made his first change after an hour, Michael Staley coming on for Joe Thornton and a 4-4-2 formation was adopted.
Staveley continued to push forward, Andrew Fox took a quick free kick and played it to Ryan Damms, he swung the ball across goal but again, the final touch was just missing with neither Richard Patterson or Simon Barraclough able to get there.
Kyle Fores-Chambers came on for Ryan Damms as Staveley then went 4-5-1 and the substitute linked in very well in the middle of the park.
Jordan Eagers made himself an opening but his shot just failed to hit the target as Staveley were now in full flow.
The overpowering nature of the Staveley attacks was such that even Michael Staley was able to get a stunning 25-yard volley on target, superbly tipped round the post by Jody Barford who again, in the last few minutes, denied substitute Jason Bentley who was played in by an audacious flicked pass over the Selby defence by Kyle Fores-Chambers.
Final score, 2-0 to the visitors.
There is now a break from the NCEL until the visit to Hall Road Rangers on the 28th January 2012.
A 450-mile round trek to Willand in Devon for the last 32 of the FA Vase on Saturday now awaits Staveley and then an NCEL Cup match away at Teversal on Tuesday 24th January 2012.
What is very clear is that the players had responded to the criticisms levied and the off the ball attitude has become strong and positive. Working as a team has suddenly put Staveley back into the promotion battle with 14-league games left and some great head to head games with those clubs pushing for promotion, it will no doubt be a really exciting run in.
