Staveley MWFC Through To Quarter Finals Of NCEL Cup

Monday 6th February 2012

Staveley MWFC video highlights are now on the Staveley MWFC website, www.staveleyfc.co.uk.

Staveley MWFC Through To Quarter Finals Of NCEL CupTeversal FC put up a spirited performance and ran Staveley MWFC close in the last 16 of the NCEL Cup on a skating ring of a pitch that started off playable and finished just about playable as the temperatures plummeted through the 90-minutes.

New signing Ian Clarke making the move from Rainworth MWFC was in the starting line up as manager Billy Fox opted for a 3-5-2 formation.

Staveley could well have been down to 10-men within minutes of the start, Ashley Foyle slipping on the frosty surface taking a ball from Tom Jones allowed lightening quick Danny Wilson to nick the ball, the Staveley defender, who has just returned from a long injurylay-off, was judged to have fouled him and received a yellow card for his troubles. Colin Cockerill's resultant free kick gathered by Staveley keeper Martin Dewberry with ease.

Staveley responded with a slick move on the top of the slope, but Andrew Fox's shot was saved by Jon Wilson.

Staveley won the first corner of the game when Jordan Eagers effort was deflected wide, further good work by Eagers down the right resulted in Ryan Damms poking a shot just wide of the mark as Staveley began to get to grips with the difficult playing surface.

Another good passing move by Staveley undid Teversal and Simon Barraclough managed a good effort on goal but Wilson saved well, the rebound was put back across goal but Teversal continued to defend well and cleared the danger.

Teversal full back Jamie Goodacre's poor pass let in Simon Barraclough, he played a great ball through for Ryan Damms who beat Ross Henshaw but could not get around the keeper who forced the Staveley striker away from goal and the opportunity went by.

Staveley again opened up the Teversal defence when a neat pass and dummy allowed Simon Barraclough to slip in Jordan Eagers whose effort was saved again by Wilson and Aymen Tahar putting the ball into an open net came after the referee had blown for a shirt pull.

Against the run of play, Teversal opened the scoring.

A poor ball out from the back of the Staveley defence was seized upon by Will Harcourt and as Staveley's back three pushed out, Danny Wilson broke through with Staveley screaming for offside, the Teversal winger broke through again, Martin Dewberry standing up and forcing the attacker wide, saved well but the Teversal winger gathered the rebound, cut back inside and the referee, some several seconds later, adjudged Dewberry to have fouled him - and a penalty was given.

Colin Cockerill put away the penalty with an unstoppable effort in off the post on 37 minutes.

A 1-0 score line for the hosts at half time gave Staveley some work to do. They had held plenty of possession - probably the majority of the game - but had failed to convert that into goals.

The pattern of the first half was picked up in the second half. Staveley passing the ball and losing it were then faced with some good counter attacking by Teversal, who were proving to be a stubborn obstacle to overcome.

Ian Clarke, also coming back from injury, had put in a good hours work and was replaced with Joe Thornton on the left, Andrew Fox moving back centrally. The Staveley substitute immediately had an impact going close with a 'cross-come-shot' effort that went past the Teversal far post.

A good clearance by Dewberry was dragged down by Simon Barraclough on the half way line and turning well, he played it down the line for the pacey Joe Thornton who went past Dan Swailes easily. The Staveley winger crossed the ball to Ryan Damms whose effort was blocked by Jamie Goodacre, the ball fell to Simon Barraclough, showing great determination to get into the area, who was then up-ended by Jon Wilson and the referee gave the penalty - a similar decision to Teversal's. Ryan Damms's conversion equalled the score, although Jon Wilson went close to saving it, on 61 minutes.

Teversal were very much in the game and were continuing to use the top side of the pitch to their liking, using the pace of their youngsters up top to test the Staveley back 3.

Staveley continued to try and pass the ball despite the frozen pitch. Jordan Eagers again went close with a looping effort as the game entered the last quarter of an hour.

Then, a cleverly placed free kick by Joe Thornton went begging to create the second goal, Staveley again failing to convert the chance.

When Jon Wilson failed to collect a cross from the left, he redeemed himself denying Aymen Tahar with an excellent double stop.

Ashley Foyle was then replaced by Chris Fawcus.

Teversal had a chance to win it on 82 minutes, Ian Gee's first shot was blocked and his second effort well saved by Martin Dewberry.

That missed chance was to cost Teversal dear.

Aymen Tahar, showing excellent determination running through on goal, saw the ball run loose and Simon Barraclough, springing into action, saw his shot saved but, he reacted superbly to the rebound to see his neat chip over the keeper cross the line, giving Staveley the 2-1 lead.

Staveley went looking for the third goal and a neat move saw Ryan Damms' effort go over the top but, from the goal kick, Richard Patterson won the challenge and played in Aymen Tahar who was tackled, the loose ball forcing a 50/50 which Joe Thornton deflected out left at the corner of the penalty area Ryan Damms taking the volley with his left foot for a superb goal and give Staveley a 3-1 lead and certain passage into the quarter finals of the NCEL Cup.

A well fought out game by both sides who should be given credit for trying to play football on what was a very frozen and difficult pitch.
