Chesterfield Wears It's Poppies With Pride

Buglers marked the beginning of Chesterfield's Poppy Appeal this weekend with crowds gathering to see Mayor Cllr Peter Barr declare the campaign open

The beginning of Chesterfield's Poppy Appeal 2011/12 was heralded by Buglers and The Mayor and Mayoress took to the High Street of the town, alongside Veterans and members of The Royal British Legion Riders Branch to promote this year's Campaign, the 90th Poppy Appeal to be held throughout the UK.

Crowds gathered to watch on the High Street and in the Pavements as the Mayor, Cllr Peter Barr, declared the campaign open and purchased the first poppy.

He told the assembled crowds that he was proud to support the Appeal and that the Royal British Legion needed the funds raised to complete their excellent and tireless work which continues to this day as they support the personnel currently serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Chesterfield raised over £45,000 from poppy sales last year, and organisers say they are very proud and grateful for every penny donated to the campaign.

Margaret Topley
, (above) who organises the campaign in Chesterfield, said that she was absolutely thrilled with the turnout and the queue of people buying poppies outside Tesco, "There's been an excellent response. The bikers (pictured below) have made a huge difference this year - they wanted to being more but couldn't. This has made a big difference as people have stopped to watch them."

The Royal British Legion Riders helped with the campaign launchShe echoed the Mayor's sentiment - that the 90th campaign is as relevant today as it's always been, "It's an important campaign, as we are still looking after people who served in the Second World War and all the wars since, but of course, we have Afghanistan going on - from where so many people are coming back injured and, as usual, for every one killed, there are at least 20 who are seriously injured or maimed - losing legs, arms or sustaining life changing Injuries.

"We've got to look after them. We've looked after the WW2 Vets for 60 years, we have another 60 years for the injured from Afghanistan and all the other conflicts since the war; Falklands, Korea, Northern Ireland - We spend an awful lot of money on welfare every week."

And she added that all the money is well spent, "Every penny that is spent on poppies goes back in. People in London who work for the Legion - their wages are paid for by membership subscriptions. Every penny in these cans goes to looking after people. Every day of the year we are helping somebody, somewhere."

And finally, Margaret issued a plea on behalf of the Legion to the people of Chesterfield, "We raised £45,000 last year, come on, please let's make it £50,000 this year. We need funds all year around and use every penny to help people who need it."
