A Multi-Million Pound Cash Boost
For Chesterfield

Wednesday 29th September 2010

Over 600 million pounds of significant development potential is around Chesterfield waiting to be accessed over the next few years.

That's the verdict of Chesterfield Borough Council Chief, Huw Bowen as he addressed a group of business leaders and councillors at the B2 NET stadium at the launch event for Council's new 'Destination Chesterfield' project.

Key developments, Mr Bowen told the group, are:

  • Chesterfield Waterside - a huge development along the A61 corridor which would provide 1500 new homes, Higher Education facilities along with two hotels and leisure and retail complexes. It is the 66th biggest development project in the UK.

  • Peak resort - To be built at Unstone this would centre around a leisure park, with 250 woodland lodges and indoor climate controlled sports centre. This will generate 3000 new jobs for the area.

  • Markham Vale - Currently being developed by both Henry Boot and DCC it’s hoped around 5000 employment opportunities will be created.

  • Staveley Works nr Hollingwood - This 150 hectare site is currently being action planned in conjunction with Chatsworth Estates who own the plot.

  • Bryan Donkins - Has seen some development, the new Fire Station and B&Q have been placed there. However the developers have gone into administration, meaning that currently new developers are being sought.

Mr Bowen also reported that the town centre, is thriving - with 95 % occupancy at present, the market is bucking the national trend and there are currently unprecedented interest from coach companies coming into Chesterfield - we are running at 600 a year coming into the town.

The Market Hall has just secured 1.8 million pounds of funding, coupled with finding already ring fenced by the council that means a multi million pound revamp of the Market Hall can go ahead in 2011.

The economy is firmly at the top of the Council's agenda, with everything being done to maintain a healthy financial position in these difficult times. The Retail Footprint index shows that the town currently sits at 133rd out of 4000 centres in the UK for retail development. With new investment due to come to the town by 2015 that figure should rise to 95th.

22 million people visited the Peak District last year with many of those coming into Chesterfield and contributing to the local economy. Its vital, said Mr Bowen, that the town is able to compete against others for this cash and urged the group to think about how this can be done.

Destination Chesterfield aims, he said, to make sure the town is in good shape to follow through on this.

So what is ‘ Destination Chesterfield?‘

A working group, set up to develop the Town's profile and reputation nationally, it is all about considering how to move the town forward and promote it.

It's made up of key players in the town, business leaders and Council Members. Funding has been secured from the European Regional Development Fund that will start the project and enable staff to be recruited to act as a focal point for this work. Already working hard behind the scenes, the work will become more public from now on, meaning that all residents can help shape the future of our town.
