Investigation Into Fire At Chesterfield Residential Home Complete

Friday 8th November 2013

At 12:13am on Sunday 13th October 2013, Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service was called to attend the report of a fire and explosion at Brookholme Croft residential nursing home in Chesterfield. At 12:13am on Sunday 13th October 2013, Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service was called to attend the report of a fire and explosion at Brookholme Croft residential nursing home in Chesterfield.

The fire involved a single bedroom in the residential nursing home, from which Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus rescued an elderly lady and extinguished the fire.

The lady received treatment at the scene from ambulance staff and was subsequently transported to hospital for treatment.

Sadly, the lady later died of her injuries.

A joint fire investigation conducted by Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service and Derbyshire Police concluded the cause of the fire to be accidental.

The cause was attributed to being an E-cigarette battery pack, which had projecting heated battery components, which had made contact with combustible materials within the bedroom. This led to a localised fire which developed to involve an aerosol container containing highly flammable gas, which then exploded.

The exact components of the E-cigarette are still under investigation.

Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service would like to ask members of the public to observe the following fire safety advice:

  • Always use electrical equipment in accordance with the
    manufacturer's instructions and guidance.

  • Ensure all electrical appliances have either a
British or European Safety Mark when you buy them.

  • Aerosol canisters contain highly flammable gasses and
should always be stored safely away from any heat source/naked flame.

  • Fit a smoke alarm on every level of your home and test them regularly.

Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service offers Home Fire Safety checks to households where it is known there is a higher risk of fire, primarily the more vulnerable groups in our community.

Those not at higher risk can also carry out their own Home Fire Safety Check, for which more information is available at www.derbys-fire.gov.uk/keeping-safe/home-fire-safety-check.

To make a Home Fire Safety Check referral, or advice regarding this, please contact your local area office:
