Top Derbyshire Doctor is Face Of New Campaign

Tuesday 17th May 2011

A top Derbyshire doctor has been chosen as one of the faces of a new campaign to encourage NHS staff to plan for their own future care.

Dr Ben Lobo is appearing on posters for the new 'Time To Talk' campaignDr Ben Lobo, Medical Director at Derbyshire Community Health Services NHS Trust, is appearing on posters (pictured left and below) for the new 'Time to Talk' campaign for NHS staff across the East Midlands

Dr Lobo said: "I am proud that staff working for the NHS dedicate so much time caring for patients, especially those near the end of their lives.

"Sometimes we have to remember that these same staff, real people, may be our future patients or their carers. This campaign encourages people to talk more openly about what is important to them, including planning ahead, sorting out practical issues, decisions and preferences for care when dying well matters."

Derbyshire Community Health Services NHS Trust will be promoting the campaign to its 5,000 staff over the coming weeks, with the regional campaign launch starting this week (16th May) to coincide with Dying Matters Awareness Week.

Improving the quality of care and choice for patients who are approaching the end of their lives is already a priority in Derbyshire. The first conference of its kind on the subject organised by Derbyshire Community Health Services back in February 2011 attracted more than 250 health professionals.

"It's our duty to give the right attention to the care of dying patients and support for those close to them as a mark of respect, to ensure compassion and promote their dignity", added Dr Lobo.

The Time to Talk campaign, organised by NHS East Midlands, includes a set of posters to help prompt health care staff to think about different aspects of death and dying, as well as a website where they can post their own thoughts.  A booklet also contains signposting information for NHS staff about making choices for end of life care.

Research for the Time to Talk campaign found that:

  • Three out of 10 East Midlands NHS staff believe that talking about
    their own death is taboo.

  • Fifty per cent of NHS staff say a prompt or resource would help
    them to talk.

  • 75 per cent of NHS staff say that receiving information at
work would make it easier to talk about death on a personal level.
