In a fascinating interview, Chesterfield FC Manager Paul Cook speaks openly to the Chesterfield Post about the man behind the manager.

Spireites Boss Paul Cook - The Man Behind The Manager - Interview

His memories as a player under various big name managers, moving into management himself, from Accrington, via Southport and Sligo through to Chesterfield.

He reveals how he sees his decision to come to the Spireites as a "No Brainer", how 'fearing for your job' drives him to success and how his ultimate management job would be at his beloved Liverpool FC.

Audio interview below.
Text transcription below the Audio link.

When Accrington Stanley came to the PROACT, few people in the ground paid attention to the man in the away dugout.

However a few short weeks later, Paul Cook was installed as Manager of Chesterfield, where he has quickly established himself as an articulate and positive man.

An ex footballer, the Spireites are the fourth club that Paul has managed and he is confident that he can lead them out of League Two.

But who is Paul Cook and what drives him?

He spoke to The Chesterfield Post about his career up to this point, his ambitions and who inspired him.

First of all we asked the gaffer to talk about himself...
"You've caught me out here! Obviously I've been a football player for quite a long time now - played for Wigan as my first team I signed for which was... I'm sure I made my debut in 1984, if I'm not mistaken. It was at home to Reading on a Tuesday night - I remember that!

"Obviously as a child you just want to be a footballer and I was brought up pre-academy, we just wanted to play football - we all had a love of the game.

"Going forward at that stage I would have been a fanatical Liverpool supporter - which I'd like to think I am to this day - but as you go forward as a player and a manager, it lessens your opportunity to watch Liverpool but I'd still consider myself a strong Liverpool supporter and I go to as many games as I can.

"Coming to the end of my playing career, I've always had a love of football. I enjoy being around a football stadium and football people and I love the thought of seeing lads come into a football team and develop, so going into coaching and management was a natural progression for me.

"I helped coach Accrington for Jon Coleman and Jimmy Bell when I was coming to the end of my career - I was player-coach - and in the year I did that, we got promotion to the Football League, which was the first time for Accrington and great for everyone connected to the club. it was great days for the club to go from non league where Jon and Jimmy had them - a fantastic achievement, certainly by those two lads more than myself as I only joined literally at the end, we had some players and I was getting up to being 35/36 years old and I always wanted to be a manager and have a go at management.

"I've always had my own ideas on football - I don't fear being sacked and I don't fear failure, doing things wrong. At the end of the day, I'd like to be remembered - no matter where I manage - for having an enthusiastic approach and trying my best. I think that when you do that, supporters will always hold you in high esteem.

"I took a job at Southport when they were going from part time to fulltime. I didn't know anything about budgets and money, I just thought that footballers grew on trees and you just put them on the pitch and it was easy to do.

"At the time Southport appointed me, it was a bad decision - well not a bad decision, but a wrong decision - you know, I think they should have gone for a far more experienced manager, who knew the leagues instead of going for myself, who was only coaching at the time.

"I didn't know you had to operate on a budget a lot less than any other in the league, so that never worked out. It was only a very short period in my life - 5 or 6 months at the most - and that included 2 months being off for pre season! So I look back on that and think it was a great learning curve - it was really good for me to go into a club and start finding out about budgets and money and contracts, as at Accrington, Jon Coleman did all that. I just coached the players - it was great! I wasn't a manager and didn't get involved in the off field stuff.

"I got the sack there and I was lucky - I had quite a few job opportunites - but, most of them were working in the likes of Academies and stuff and it's something I've never wanted to do. I'm not saying I'll never do, as I have to work, but it wasn't something I wanted to do. I always wanted to work with senior players.

"An opportunity came quite quickly for me to go to Sligo Rovers in Ireland and I discussed it with my family and we decided that if I wanted to manage, I must go and manage, because I think if you're an out of work manager, it's hard to get a job. I'm not being disrespectful to anyone out of a job, but if you're successful and you're doing well, you can always make people stand up and take notice.

"So, I went over there and I look back on my time at Sligo really fondly. I joined a club that was very low in the Irish Premier League and wasn't getting very good crowds. I was there for four and a half years and by the time I left the club had success. We'd been in Europe and we had trophies and the catalyst for the club was winning the league this year and the year I left.

"I look back on my achievements and this year there were 5 nominations for player of the year in Ireland - all five were Sligo players and all five were players I'd signed. I look back on that and think to myself 'wow'.

"Unfortunately for everyone at Sligo, it ended - bitterly's not the right word - but not how it should, I should have ended on better terms because I felt I'd done a lot for the club and the club had done a lot for me. But having been in Ireland for four and a half years, it was enough - it was time to move on.

"I got a lot of criticism from fans which I still think is unfair. I don't get involved in the media side of arguments and I've never given another interview in Sligo since I left. I don't believe in arguing in public and, at the end of the day, Sligo have gone on to win the league and I'd like to think I played a part in that. They've won the league for the first time in a long, long time and they're in the Champions League next year and I think supporters should be respectful of what we all do.

"The opportunity came to manage Accrington - again I wanted to come home. In the last 3 or 4 months of my time in Ireland, I'd turned down a chance to go and manage St Johnstone's in Scotland and manage in the [Scottish] Premier League. But I didn't want to go and manage in Scotland. St Johnstone are a fantastic club and it's great to see them doing well. They have got good people and I really do wish them every success.

"So Accrington then came in for me and it was a 'no-brainer', it was home. I was coming back to Liverpool and a chance to see my children growing up a lot more and Accrington is a really special club, it's got fantastic people who work there. Every day that Accrington are in this league is a testimony to the people who put in work there - they don't have the budget, stadium or infrastructure of other clubs, but it doesn't stop the people working really hard daily to make the club better and they have fantastic people there.

"I look at them sitting in 12th in our league and I'd like to think I played a part in that - in the recruitment of players which is difficult. I had great people - Liam Richardson, Les Parry and Paul Hodge and I was backed by Rob Heys who is a great Chief Exec and everyone else who works there. So, for Accrington to be 12th in the league I think is a fantastic achievement for everyone at the club and I look back on that fondly.

"I then got an opportunity - and I got a bit of criticism from Accrington people for coming here - which I think is a bit unfair, as whilst I'm at the club, I give everything to my job and whilst I was at Accrington, I gave everything.

"The opportunity came to come to Chesterfield and you only have to look around the ground to know that it's a step up. I might be criticised for saying that, I might be criticised from whatever quarters - it's a step up. A real football club in terms of infrastructure, support and going forward and it was a no-brainer for me.

"It was a great opportunity for me - that I wanted to come here, and like I say, I don't fear the sack, being criticised by supporters, I like to know I do my best. I demand effort from people around me and that we play with passion when we go out there, if I don't get that from players whilst I'm manager, the players will go before me!"

Which manager that you've come across do you try to emulate?
"I was lucky that I played for some fantastic managers. I started with Harry McNally at Wigan - he was such a character. He wouldn't have survived in present day football, he wouldn't have survived with the players, he wouldn't have put up with the players - he wouldn't have entertained it in any shape or form.

"Then I went right through with Brian Hamilton, Dave Stringer and Graham Turner at Wolves - Graham Taylor then at Wolves - he'd just come from being England manager.

"I went with Phil Neale to Coventry, Ron Atkinson, Gordon Strachan, Gary Megson at Stockport, John Aldridge at Tranmere and up to Burnley - and I look back on my time at Burnley as possibly the happiest of my life because I played for a manager that understood you.

"We had a lot of senior players that were coming to the end of their career and Stan Turner was just a different type of character. He was certainly a very tough man and he didn't suffer fools in any way shape or form and all the previous managers were all fantastic managers - they've gone on to have great careers, some of them are big iconic names - but Stan was a little bit different.

"He could make you feel so good but he also had that way of making you aware that he was in that room - and that was a special quality in Stan. We had a great set of lads at Burnley, a lot coming to the end of their career and it's probably why we just knuckled down that little bit more. My times at Burnley will always be very fond memories, we had great success together and off the field, we had great team spirit and a great work ethic to each other.

"Football has changed nowadays with sports science and everything else that's going on in the game, a lot of the older managers don't manage now, because they can't - sometimes they should be man enough and big enough to admit that - I think they'd be better thought of."

What drives you? Success?
"No, it's not, it's fear for your job! It's a very valid point. I tell people all the time that I do think you should have a trigger that you fear for your job. It's not fear for my job meaning I'm fearing my job - it's a feeling that I'm not doing my job properly because once I do my job properly, I won't fear for my job! It's the reminder that you must do it well because if you don't, there will be somebody there to do it in your place.

"I'd like to think I transmit that through my staff and through everybody else, it's not a fear for your job, more a case of do your job correctly - however you want to put it - but I just feel those words hit home a little bit harder than anything else because, if you do your job well, you don't have to fear for your job.

"So that's a little reminder for me daily - I come in and I try to treat everybody with a bit of respect and that goes for everybody. I think a lot of managers nowadays are that far stuck up themselves it's untrue, they think it’s all about them and, unfortunately for them, it's not. They've got the luck and the privilege to manage some really good clubs and they should be a little bit more respectful of the people around them."

You're a Liverpool supporter, so you understand the importance of football to the community around it...
"It's people’s life, it affects them from the weekend to the next weekend. They save up and spend money, I've seen people - in my own family, with my own father - we might have gone short so we could go to the match. When people give up money and time for players - we've just lost that, somewhere in football since the transition.

"I'm not saying that players should go down into factories, I'm not trying to be one of those old dinosaurs, but they should respect what people are doing. Supporters turn up to travel to Bristol at 9am on supporters coaches and players should know that, so that when we fail or we don't do well, it's not through lack of knowledge.

"Liverpool fans, they gasp for success. On the back of that, we haven't won the league for so long - it's a passion, but certainly in Chesterfield, I know we haven't got the numbers, but it doesn't mean that we don't hurt as much as Liverpool."

And you know how it feels to be disappointed this season...
"I think it should drive you on. I say to our lads all the time, it's not every day you come in to work. My message is simple - work every day to get better, every day you go home, you should go home a better person, a better player than the one that came through the door that morning."

Is being Manager of Liverpool the ultimate aim?
"Yes it is! I sit here in front of you today, and I want to do the best I can in my career! You get criticised for a lack of loyalty sometimes, but managers normally leave clubs to do better, normally it means they left it in a better state than what they took it over and I think as a manager, if you can leave a club in a better place than when you took over, I think you've gone a good job.

"I look back here and I know John Sheridan really well, through playing football, and he's took this club to a promotion and to Wembley. People should never decry what John did here in a transition into a fantastic new stadium, into a great infrastructure and some very special times as well, and I think John has carried the torch for the club.

"Obviously that changed, but I'd like to think that people should be a liitle more grateful for what he did. It's gone down in history and now we can move forward and I hope maybe I can take the club to those places as well."

As I left after the Hartlepool game, I saw you skipping across the car park with your little boy - family is very important to you isn't it?
"Family is very important to me. My family travel to all the games, my brother supports me greatly, my children, my mum and dad - my dad is very sick at the moment - and it always brings reality home to you.

"I like to sit and have a pint after the game and just talk about the match and football and what's happened in the week, as I do believe there's got to be time to unwind. You can't be permanently 'high high', intense, everyone needs a break, even the players believe it or not. It's just a lot easier to have a break when you're doing well. After the Hartlepool win, you can sit and have a couple of pints and everything,s good. I certainly try and do the same stuff on the back of the Barnet defeat, although you're hurting a lot more."
