'Get Your Life Back' Event

Tuesday 28th June 2011

Chesterfield residents are being invited to a free event offering support and advice for anyone affected by Heart Disease, Diabetes and Stroke on Wednesday, June 29th at 1.30pm in the new b2net stadium in Chesterfield.

The 'Get Your Life Back', event, on Wednesday, June 29th at 1.30pm will see renowned experts from across the UK speaking on Cardiac Rehabilitation, Angina and Stroke, Health and Social care. Voluntary organisations will be on hand to offer advice and chat about local issues.

Heart problems, stroke and diabetes affect the quality of life of many patients, carers and families in Derbyshire. An ageing population being diagnosed with more long-term conditions such as coronary heart disease, stroke and diabetes means that more local people will experience problems in the future.

The event is the result of cardiac support groups in Chesterfield, Clay Cross and Matlock coming together to help people reclaim their lives after a serious cardiac event or diagnosis.

Too often, patients who undergo cardiac procedures or have a cardiac / stroke event never follow through on aftercare believing incorrectly that their hospital treatment is a final cure and that they can return to their previous lifestyle without a care. It has been argued that the success and improvements in heart surgery and recovery after stroke are a primary cause of these misconceptions.

Most people are offered rehabilitation at hospital and in the community but up to 80% of patients 'skip it' and go back to their old ways risking further distress to themselves and their loved ones. Families and carers describe how they don't know where to turn for support.

Experts say that the cost to the NHS is significant and looks set to increase. During these times of recession and tighter budgets for the NHS, life-long rehabilitation can save money in the long term as well as increasing the quality of life for patients.

For comparison, the National Audit of Cardiac Rehabilitation survey for 2005–06 found the most common cost of a cardiac rehabilitation programme was £413. A single day in a coronary care unit costs £1,400. An angioplasty costs £3,000. Bypass surgery costs £8,000.

Professor Patrick Doherty, National Clinical Lead for Cardiac Rehabilitation and a speaker at the event says "...the idea of continuing cardiac rehabilitation beyond conventional hospital based rehab and delivering it over the long term is absolutely vital and, for me, one of the best ways of delivering that is within a wider social context. I believe 'cardiac support groups' represent a best practice example of the big society as they help foster a sense of togetherness where it counts."
