Martin Guptill only arrived in England on Saturday before he was immediately thrust into the Derbyshire line up to face Surrey in the County Championship.
The New Zealander's first stay at the crease was a short one, but only after launching a massive six off England Test prospect, Jade Dernbach. Guptill returned a catch to Tim Linley moments later and the tall Kiwi departed.
Guptill (pictured left) was thrown in at the deep end but enjoyed it, "Didn't really go to plan, I hit a six but I got out. I've started with this four dayer and it's been a good experience so far, I'm looking forward to the T20's".
Guptill was part of the New Zealand World Cup Squad that took part in the semi finals, but they lost out to Sri Lanka. The Kiwis had a fantastic quarter final win over South Africa, which Guptill featured in but unfortunately for Martin he only bagged one run. "We got ahead of where people were judging us and we were very proud of where we got and silenced some critics back home".
Guptill started his international career off to a flyer with a century on one day debut against the West Indies, "That was pretty special, not many people have scored hundreds on debut and to be the first for New Zealand was pretty special and something I will always remember, hopefully though I can add to the cause for Derbyshire. I'm an aggressive batsmen and like to score quickly and get some runs. I'm here for the rest of the summer and I'm looking to build on Derbyshire's good start."
John Wright, the current Coach for New Zealand, was also a former Derbyshire overseas player back in the late seventies - early eighties and Guptill was quick to praise the influence of Wright in him coming to Derbyshire. "Yeah, John Wright was a big influence, having played here in the past he asked me if I was interested and I grabbed it with both hands.
"I'm not too familiar with Derbyshire, I've kept up to date with the progress and I'm looking forward to being here".
You can catch Martin and the rest of the Derbyshire team in action this Thursday against Lancashire at the County Ground, start time 7pm.
