Derbyshire began their T20 campaign with the most dramatic of finishes. Requiring three runs to win the game, Lancashire skipper Glen Chapple could only scramble two and Derbyshire secured a tie.

A fine knock by Stephen Moore (72) for Lancashire helped his side settle for a draw.

For Derbyshire, Wes Durston batted superbly well along with Chesney Hughes putting on 103 for the second wicket, which is Derbyshire's highest in T20 games versus Lancashire. The 190 that Derbyshire posted was their highest T20 score at the County Ground.

On a fine sunny Derby evening, the Falcons started their T20 campaign, bringing in left arm paceman Mark Footit and also Tim Groenewald who was accommodated into the side after being rested for the recent County Championship game which ended in defeat against Surrey.

Derbsyhire Falcons' Martin GuptillDerbyshire started with Martin Guptill (left) and Wes Durston opening the batting, their first boundary came in the third over off the bowling of Glenn Chapple. Durston hooked the first six of the match again off the bowling of Chapple.

Lancashire brought on young slow bowler, Simon Kerrigan, who in his first over bowled the leg stump of Martin Guptill for 21, with the Derbyshire score on 52. Durston then continued to up the tempo of the Derbyshire batting and brought up his 50 in the tenth over.

Chesney Hughes, who had started quite methodically, proceeded then to unleash his hard hitting talent with two sixes in one over off the unfortunate Kyle Hogg. The Anguillan launched the ball to long on, where Jordan Clark spilled the ball and to compound his error, the ball dropped over the line. Hughes then hit another powerful effort that Luke Proctor could only parry over for six runs, it would have been a superb catch.

Hughes' quickfire 50 came after 24 balls; he hit a further six over the deep cover boundary. His fine innings came to an end when he was run out from deep point, chancing a second run. Hughes' innings was off 32 balls with five fours and four sixes. The partnership was broken at 103 runs between Hughes and Durston, Hughes equalled his best score which was against Yorkshire last season. Wayne Madsen's innings lasted one ball when he was caught at third man by Hogg off the bowling of Chapple.

Greg Smith soon followed, caught in the deep by Steven Croft. The 26 year old then repeated the trick by taking the wicket of Durston the very next ball. Durston played a fine innings of 86 off 58 balls with eight fours and two sixes.

Derbyshire closed on 190-5 after their 20 overs.

Lancashire set off like the proverbial train with 31 coming off the first three overs, and Stephen Moore reached his 50 off just 29 balls. The Lancashire keeper was dropped by his counterpart, Luke Sutton, in the eighth over when Moore was on 52. Derbyshire then managed to reign in the blitz from the Lightning by grabbing wickets at regular intervals in the final ten. Tom Smith was adjudged LBW to Greg Smith in the tenth over for 33. Steven Croft hit three sixes in his quickfire innings of 26 off just 12 balls, before being caught by Tim Groenwald on the deep square leg boundary.

With just five overs to spare, Lancashire still required a further 48 runs to win the game. Derbyshire then got the vital wicket of Moore after he was caught by Martin Guptill on the square leg boundary for 72. Moore's fine innings coming off 55 balls and included eight fours and two sixes. Guptill then proved why he was voted the best fielder in the recent World Cup, by stopping an odds on boundary with a superb one handed save. Moments later, Gareth Cross was caught at long on by Wayne Madsen for 7 and the Lightning required 32 from 18 balls.

Young Jordan Clark was keeping Lancashire in the match with some powerful strokeplay, the Cumbrian born batsman was playing in his first T20 match and showed no nerves as he edged the Red Rose county closer. Clark hit a massive six in the penultimate over, before Wes Durston held a brilliant catch in the deep from Paul Horton, who departed for 20 off 13 balls. Durston, who capped a Man of the Match display, held onto the catch despite slipping at the crucial moment.

Derbyshire Falcons captain Luke SuttonJordan Clark was then bowled with only two balls to go for a swashbuckling 19 from 11 balls. Lightning skipper, Glenn Chapple, came to the crease requiring three from the final ball, a straight drive down the ground brought two runs and levelled the match. Steffan Jones finished with fine figures of 1-36 from his four overs, with Chesney Hughes pushing Durston for Man of the Match with 1-19 off his three overs.

Derbyshire captain Luke Sutton (pictured left) was in pragmatic mood at the conclusion of the match. Sutton said "We fancied our chances, Lancashire got off to a good start, with three overs to go I felt we were going to win it, and going into the last over.

"Lancashire had the impetus and it could have gone their way. Tim Groenewald bowled very well in the final over and we very nearly won it."
