Derbyshire CCC's Future Cricket Strategy

Friday 10th June 2011

Back Our Home Grown Players - “9-2” by 2013

Derbyshire's team selections will include 9 England Qualified players from 2013. This will be achieved by backing our home grown cricketers and giving them the requisite time and support to succeed.

A 9-2 strategy will increase the Club's income through the ECB's Performance Related Fee programme and this will, in time, be reflected in the cricket budgets.

This strategy will also create a real sense of belonging to a Derbyshire culture which should assist in retaining key players in the future.

It is important to note that from the current squad Greg Smith, Wayne Madsen and Chesney Hughes are all in the process of England qualification.

A Defined Young Player Pathway

Derbyshire will offer long-term contracts to home grown players with the motivation to perform maintained via the advent of an annual performance related appraisal and salary review.

These players will then be given a clear development programme both for their cricket and off the field.

The taking of coaching badges and putting these skills to good use with current Derbyshire age-group players will form part of these pathways thus continuing to engender a One Club ethos.

Karl Krikken & Luke Sutton’s Roles Permanent

Karl Krikken has been appointed as the Club's Head Coach for the next three years.

Krikken is a one county man with 25 years of service at Derbyshire. He is very well respected throughout the game and is an excellent coach who already possesses his Level 4 badge.

He has also worked extensively with all of the Club's Academy graduates and is therefore uniquely placed to assess their development.

Krikken will continue to work alongside Club Captain Luke Sutton who is a well respected leader, very ambitious and who has extensive connections throughout the county game.

Krikken and Sutton have complementary skills and their partnership in the management of team affairs is already working well.

Coaching Interaction

While Karl Krikken as Head Coach will spend the majority of his time with the First XI, the Club's coaches will interchange between the teams (Second XI, Academy etc) with the aim of developing a more seamless and consistent approach across the Club.

Specialist Coaching Fund

The Club will establish a dedicated pot of cash to fund world class specialist coaches (for example batting, bowling and fielding) at the discretion of Karl Krikken as Head Coach.

This fund could also be used to expand the experiences of Derbyshire players by sending them to play abroad during the English Winter.

New contracts for key players

While the main thrust of Derbyshire's future cricket strategy is to back home grown players, clearly this is a long-term plan and needs to be tempered by the fact that the Club has some excellent established players whose continued presence is crucial both for their contribution on the field and their role in bringing on the younger players.

To that end, new contracts will be offered to those key individuals where their financial demands accord with the Club's evaluation of their worth.

Two such players, namely Greg Smith and Tim Groenewald, have already attracted interest from other counties and contract negotiations are ongoing.

Landmark Player Signing

Derbyshire are now looking to recruit a landmark signing of international pedigree from 2012.

The new player could at this stage be domestic or overseas and will be recruited for a combination of match winning ability and international experience.

Both Karl Krikken and Luke Sutton are fully supportive of this initiative.
