Derbyshire 183-3 (20 overs) - Durham 178-5 (20 overs)
Derbyshire won by 5 runs.
Derbyshire won their first T20 match in a rain soaked match at the County Ground. Derbyshire were helped by man of the match, Martin Guptill (left), who hit his highest Derbyshire score of 60 as the Falcons posted a score of 183-3 after their 20 overs.
Durham made an almost like for like start with Derbyshire but lost wickets at crucial times, which saw them need 15 off the last over. South African David Miller and Gareth Breese could only scramble three off the first three balls, and in the end succumbed to some very tight bowling from Stefan Jones in the final over.
Derbyshire made one change to the side which lost to Nottinghamshire last Friday night at Trent Bridge. Former Chesterfield CC player, Ross Whiteley, came in for Greg Smith who had a shin problem. 17 year old Tom Knight kept his place in the starting line-up to make his home debut, fresh from his promising start in Nottingham.
As for Durham, Chesterfield born player and former Derbyshire all rounder Ian Blackwell started the match alongside former England one day captain Paul Collingwood.
Durham won the toss and elected to field, and quickly the Falcons got off to a flying start with Martin Guptill and Wes Durston putting on 88 for the first wicket, Guptill bringing up his 50 in the seventh over, his first for Derbyshire. Durston kept up his fine form, before being caught by Phil Mustard in the eleventh over for 25.
Guptill followed two overs later for a very impressive 60 off 43 balls with eight fours and one six, when the New Zealander mistimed a full toss and pulled straight to extra cover, where Gareth Breese gratefully kept hold. Guptill showed what the Derbyshire faithful can expect to see for the rest of the summer.
Chesney Hughes kept up his fine run of T20 form with a blistering 23 from 14 balls with two fours and one six before he was caught on the deep mid-wicket boundary with Derbyshire on 122.
Garry Park then joined Wayne Madsen at the crease, and those two saw Derbyshire through to the close of their innings, by adding a further 61 runs. Madsen scored his maiden T20 50 and ended up with 53 not out. Park closed, playing a more withdrawal role on 15 not out off 10 balls.
Durham set about Derbyshire's total by also adding 88 for the first wicket before Phil Mustard was stumped by Luke Sutton off the bowling of Chesney Hughes for 36. Gordan Muchall was partnered by former Derbyshire player, Blackwell, but the former England international's stay didn't last long as Garry Park caught on the long on boundary from the bowling of young Tom Knight.
Two wickets in the next over really turned the match Derbyshire's way, first to go was Muchall for 62 caught by Knight at cover. The youngster holding to the catch in wet conditions as the rain came steadily down. Muchall's innings was off 43 balls and included six fours. Paul Collingwood was next to depart the scene for a disappointing 6 caught by Jon Clare on the deep mid wicket boundary from the bowling of Wes Durston.
Durham needed 56 off the remaining 4 overs, but with the dangerous Miller at the crease, Durham reduced the target. Captain Dale Benkinstein soon departed though caught by Groenewald off the bowling of Stefan Jones and Durham required 31 off the final two overs.
Gareth Breese joined Miller at the crease and the pair took Durham to the final over requiring 15. The Dynamos could only scramble two off the first ball bowled, and eventually struggled to get the ball of the square following some superb death bowling by Jones and the Falcons won by 5 runs.
Following the match, captain Luke Sutton (left) said, "We did unbelievably well, it was very wet out there. It was a very good win, a great batting start and an outstanding win. Wes Durston and Martin Guptill are superb players along with Madsen and Hughes, great middle order batsmen. There is a long way to go in this group and we took a massive step forward."
Sutton spoke highly of young spinner Tom Knight, "We have a young spinner bowling against England internationals and we think highly of him. We may well lose him to the England U18's but it's good for his development. We have lots of work to do but we have some very promising players."
The wicketkeeper laughed about the amount of stumpers on the coaching staff, "There are lots of wicketkeepers that make good coaches and we have a few with myself and Karl Krikken and Jamie Pipe on the staff here."
