Former Players Haunting Gladiators. Stocksbridge Match Preview

Friday 19th October 2012
by IAN RICHARDSON.

Matlock Town will be hoping that they are not undone by a former player for the second week running when they travel to Stocksbridge searching for crucial league points on Saturday.

Last weekend, Tyeisse 'TJ' Nightingale, who had six months with the Gladiators last season, scored the decider for Eastwood in their smash and grab raid on Matlock at the Reynolds Stadium.

Now Matlock will face Nathan Joynes, who left to join Steels last FridayNow they will face Nathan Joynes, (left) who left to join Steels last Friday and netted a brace in Steels' first home victory of the season, 3-0 against Rushall Olympic on Tuesday, a win which took the Yorkshiremen above Matlock in the table and put them in good heart for Matlock's visit.

"Nathan came to me after a hard training session, saying he was packing in and then we found he wanted to sign for Stocksbridge!" Manager Mark Atkins explained. Joynes had been hit by a knee injury since scoring a hat-trick in Town's 4-0 home win against Chorley a year ago and has been unable to fight his way into the Gladiators line up this season.

Matlock are a point behind Stocksbridge, but have played two games fewer, so if Atkins' men can earn all three points on Saturday, it will do their league position, currently 19th, the power of good.

They should really have comfortably beaten Eastwood given their comprehensive dominance of the possession, but lost because they conceded a poor goal and left their shooting boots in the dressing room.

"We dominated the game without making their goalkeeper work" Atkins reflected. "Our finishing was poor, there was a lack of concentration and I would even go as far to say we were lazy going forward and it cost us the game.

"Eastwood had one chance and scored and I was disappointed how easily the ball got into our box. We were on top for the whole game but we couldn't take the chances and that's the be all and end all and what football's about."

So the Eastwood defeat coupled with the Stocksbridge win has put Matlock under pressure. They have just two league wins, a double over fellow strugglers Frickley Athletic to date.

It does put pressure on us - agreed Manager Mark Atkins"It does put pressure on us" agreed Atkins. "There's no excuses, we've not been good enough to take our chances. We've got to be able to handle the pressure but I still believe we've enough quality to see us start picking up points to push us up the league."

Matlock return to home soil on Tuesday to take on promotion chasing Chorley.

"Whether a team is below us, near us or well above us, every game becomes important" Atkins (left) continued.

"Now we've really got to work at it, starting on Saturday.

"I thought we'd turned a corner then we get the Eastwood result but I believe we're capable of collecting the points we need.

"Stocksbridge will make life hard for us and Chorley are a good side with good strikers and are physical and strong. But we beat them 4-0 at home last year when they were top of the league, so it's got to be about us, how we perform. Players have got to provide the goods, they may only have the one chance, for if they don't perform and someone else comes in and does well, they'll stay in the side."

Joynes was not the only Matlock striker on the move last weekend. Shaun Tuton, who was signed from Teversal in September, has joined Belper Town on loan.

"Belper approached us as they were struggling for forwards injury-wise and they asked us if we had anyone who wanted games. Shaun fancied it for the Evo-Stik League is a different level to what he's been used to. Playing at Belper will bring him on ready for the Premier Division. He's still very much in our plans, he has to stay there for fourteen days and then we can recall him at twenty four hours notice if needed."

Encouraging news from the Gladiators' treatment room is that striker Bradley Grayson could be included in this weekend's squad after seven weeks out with hamstring trouble. Midfielder James Ashmore and winger Ben Algar are "close" to a return according to Atkins, having been laid low since the first week of the season.

Matlock have also released central defender Luke Foster who played for Sheffield United against them in the recent pre season friendly. Foster has lost his place to Oscar Radford who was signed from Kettering Town a fortnight ago.
