Nottinghamians 1st XV 0 - 50 Chesterfield Panthers 1st XV
Midlands 4 East (North) League
Saturday 12th January 2014
Chesterfield Panthers travelled to league opposition Nottinghamians in high spirits following their recent run of form that's taken them to the top of the table for the first time in over 10 years.
And their high spirits remained on the return journey having notched up their ninth consecutive win to retain their top of the table position.
Chesterfield kicked off the game with the same precision and power that has earned them recent plaudits, with the Panthers pack chasing hard and winning the first penalty of the game.
Not giving the opposition time to settle, scrum half Jordan Grayson took the quick tap and darted past the slower forwards to score the game's opening try with his brother Glen Grayson converting.
This seemed to stir the Nottinghamians pack into action having ruck after ruck in the Panthers half. Despite all this possession, the Chesterfield forwards stood firm and eventually turned over the ball to clear deep into the opposition 22 for a Nottinghamians line out close to their own try line.
Panthers could smell blood and with pressure applied by Will Stride, Pat Holleworth reacted first to a loose ball to score the second try.
The following 20 minutes of the game became an arm wrestle, with both packs looking for dominance.
The only thing separating the sides being another trademark snipe from Jordan Grayson, sidestepping his way from the 22 metre line, again converted by Glenn Grayson.
HT: 0 - 19
Some stern words from Panthers' coach Derek Sherlock during the break seemed to work for the team, resulting in a series of well-constructed breakdowns which led to Glenn Grayson finishing superbly in the corner to add to the family try scoring tally in the first few minutes of the second half.
Fitness was now starting to tell for the league leaders as the forwards started to assert themselves, carrying ball after ball driving deep in to the Nottinghamians' territory. This was well finished with a powerful drive from number 8 Luke Holt with the game's fifth try. Grayson converting.
With Chesterfield now firmly on top, the back line started to dig deep into their repertoire with a flowing move resulting in a great line from Chris 'Bjorn' Ward finishing under the posts. Converted by Grayson.
Fly half Ali Sherlock was now starting to move the ball. A great loop up the right hand side and an inside pass from the number 10, ended in the tireless Rob Collins strolling in again for another try. Converted by Grayson.
The final try of the game came with a nice play from John Ryan and Steve Avenier to put Ali Sherlock away in the corner.
FT: 0 - 50
Praising Man of the Match Paul Jones for his tireless work up front, Captain Steve Avenier said: "To follow last week's high of going top was always going to be a tough ask, but the lads dug deep against a competitive team to run in some really nice tries. Jordan Grayson showed that my place in the team is never nailed on and that competition within the squad is what will propel us forward to the next level."
