The Sheffield Steelers are delighted to confirm the signing of 26 year old defenseman Gord Baldwin on a two year contract. The Sheffield Steelers are delighted to confirm the signing of 26 year old defenseman Gord Baldwin on a two year contract.

Baldwin
joins the Steelers on the strong recommendation of returning forward Steven Goertzen, both players were team mates back in 2011-12 with Czech side BK Milada Boleslav and Baldwin was drafted in the 3rd round of the 2005 NHL entry draft by the Calgary Flames and boats 275 American League and play off games.

Steelers head coach Doug Christiansen (below) is delighted with the Baldwin signing saying, "Gord is a tall, skilled d-man. I actively recruited him last summer. My loss last year is our gain this summer!

Steelers head coach Doug Christiansen is delighted with the Baldwin signing

"Gord can play a variety of roles. He can be a shutdown D, he can contribute on special teams and he has a proven track record as a leader. Gord will be a premier defender in our league. I wanted a player who could play in all situations and we got one.

"I would like to thank the University of Sheffield Business School for all of their help in the process. Without getting into too many details, they were outstanding to work with. Gord will be in the first graduating class whose entire academic experience will be in their new facility. He will join Frank Doyle in the class of 2015.

"Finally, one of my goals when I took the job was to make our alums and current players become our best ambassadors. Steven Goertzen was instrumental in the recruiting process. He made a number of calls to Gord selling him on the University and the Steelers. There is no greater compliment than a current player recruiting a friend."

Baldwin also thanks Goertzen for the Steelers introduction saying, "This is an exciting move for me and one that came around very quickly. I played with Steven Goertzen a couple of years ago and I was having lunch with him last week. He was telling me about Sheffield and how much he had enjoyed his first year.

"The next thing, I was speaking to the coach and agreeing a contract and further education at the University of Sheffield. It was a pretty important lunch I think you would say."

Baldwin describes himself as an all-rounder, "I'd like t think I do a bit of everything" he said, "I'm a two way player, I can chip in offensively and I think I'm excellent defensively. I can play physical when needed too."

Baldwin will make his Steelers home debut on Sunday 8th September at the Motorpoint (Sheffield) Arena when the Steelers open their season against the Nottingham Panthers - face off 5.00pm.
