Africa Bound!

Tuesday 14th August 2012

Africa Bound with the National Police Aid Convoys in ZambiaLater this week, five people from the Bolsover area will join the sixteen strong team from the National Police Aid Convoys charity, who are travelling to Zambia to meet the two huge containers of aid dispatched in April and to check on some of the fifteen sent since Christmas.

Although individuals travel out occasionally, the Zambia team trip only happens every two years with the last occurring in 2010, when twenty people ventured out together.

Pam Richardson and Jack Slack (81) from Creswell, have been with the charity for 10 years and are very excited by the prospect. "It's a unique opportunity to visit some really remote areas and help distribute some of the schools equipment, clothing and medical gear from the Bolsover area."

The Police Aid Convoys have been operating since 1993 and Charity Chairman, retired Mansfield Inspector David Scott was one of the founding members. He says that a visit by so many people to Zambia will inspire all those around them, and he believes that the team will again return motivated and excited when they see how easy it is to make some real and sustainable changes, and it will again lead on to bigger things.

He looks forward to the next challenge, "Zambia and Africa generally were too hard to do six years ago, but we have three established bases who can absorb everything we send to them. Who knows where we will go next - Western Samoa and Nicaragua are the newest applicants."

The charity still drive themselves in 'convoy' to Albania in borrowed trucks every year and report that it is still a country in desperate need

The charity still drive themselves in 'convoy' to Albania in borrowed trucks every year and report that it is still a country in desperate need, that they don't intend abandoning, Mr Scott says, "We always go in to projects with the clear objective of supplying what is needed for a long period. We move on when the element of 'need' reduces to 'want' - and the need in Albania is still present in the rural areas."

The NPAC team are all volunteers who pay all their own costs when they go abroad, and charity secretary Wanda Adams says that this is the mortar that holds them together, "The fact that no-one is on a freebie, or takes anything out of the charity, is an inspiration in itself, and very few charities can celebrate that aspect."

The volunteers are by no means all police officers or have police connections. The group includes a lot of retired people, many students, professionals, housewives and unemployed people. Anyone is welcome to join them and should email Wanda at enqs@npac.org.uk or leave a message on 01159 390 999.

Other projects current or previously is Croatia, Bosnia, Serbia, Kosovo, Romania, Bulgaria, Russia, Pakistan, India, Hungary, Rwanda, Kenya and Gambia.
