Chesterfield Health Issues Profiled In Report

Monday 18th July 2011

There's good news for those of us who live in Chesterfield. as a recent survey taken shows that people in the town are getting healthier, with more of us living longer than they were ten years ago.

Figures just published by the Association of Public Health Observatories show that on average men live for 77.1 years and women 82.7 years - a few years less than the national average of 78.3 years for men and 82.3 years for women.

Early deaths from cancer and from heart disease and stroke have also fallen.

The report highlights that in Chesterfield's poorest communities life expectancy is 8.4 years lower for men and 4.8 years lower for women.

However, the number of adult smokers in the area remains above the national average of 21.2 per cent at 23.3 per cent. The number of women smoking during pregnancy is also higher than the England average at 16 per cent.

Diabetes and obesity continue to be a key challenge, with 6.7 per cent of adults living in the area diagnosed with the illness against a national average of 5.40 per cent. Estimated levels of adult obesity are worse than the England average and the rate of hospital stays for alcohol related harm is higher than average.

The report does say though that improvements had been made in children's fitness levels, with 57.6 per cent of pupils spending at least three hours each week on school sport compared to the England average of 55.5 per cent.

Health bosses at NHS Derbyshire are now to use this information to help decide where improvements to health can be made.

Dr Bruce Laurence, Acting Director of Public Health, said: "Every day we are challenged to use our skills and resources to make a real difference to the lives of thousands of people living in and around Chesterfield.

"These summaries provide us with an invaluable snapshot of the health of people in Chesterfield, and we are pleased to have made improvements in changing people’s lives for the better.

"There is no room for complacency, and we will carry on working with our partners to tackle key emerging issues including diabetes, obesity, alcohol misuse and the impacts of social deprivation on health."

The reports are published online at www.apho.org.uk and are searchable by region.
