Thursday 23rd September 2010
Elderly and vulnerable residents in NE Derbyshire will be given door chains, window alarms and door bars as part of a "Don't Open Your Door to Crime" initiative to tackle burglary.
Officers from the Clay Cross Safer Neighbourhood Teams, Community Safety Partnership and the Home Improvement Agency will visit areas that have been targeted by distraction burglars in recent months fitting anti-burglar devices.
They will also be advice by NE Derbyshire District Council and Severn Trent Water about what to expect if genuine workman ever came to their door - as many distraction burglars claim to be from the local council or water board.
They will be visiting the following villages:
- Holmewood and Heath on
Monday, September 27 from 10am to 2pm;
- Grassmoor and North Wingfield on
Thursday, September 30 from 10am to 2pm;
- Tupton on
Tuesday, November 2 from 10am to 2pm.
The initiative has been launched as part of Derbyshire Constabulary's "Operation Relentless", which is a six-week partnership initiative aimed at tackling anti-social behaviour and alcohol related crime.
The operation runs between September 27 and November 8 and consists of six, themed weeks; the first is improving local neighbourhoods.
NE Derbyshire Community Safety Partnership Sergeant Mel Hagues said: "If anyone feels they, or perhaps their neighbour, may be vulnerable to this type of crime let us know.
"We will try to help them through educating them about distraction burglary and by fitting these crime prevention devices to their home while we are in the area."
