Police are urging people in Chesterfield and Amber Valley to be vigilant following a series of street robberies.
Detectives in the area say there has been a slight increase in robberies in recent weeks but that there are steps people can take to avoid becoming a victim:
- Keep your mobile and wallet out of sight
- If you suspect you're being followed go into a shop and call someone to come and meet you
- Use public transport or walk with friends when going home in twilight or darkness. Keep to well lit and busy areas
- Be aware of your surroundings
Police are investigating an incident which took place at around midnight on Saturday, September 18. A 30-year-old man was walking alone on a footpath off Thirlmere Drive, Dronfield, listening to his ipod. He was approached by a man who shone a torch in his face and demanded his ipod and mobile.
When he refused, he was punched in the face and kicked and his property was stolen. The robber was white and in his late teens. He was about 5ft 7ins tall and slim.
At about 12.30am on Saturday, September 11, a 45-year-old man was robbed as he walked under the railway bridge at Station Road, Langley Mill. He was suddenly punched in the face and his gold chain was snatched from his neck. His leather jacket was also stolen.
Detective Chief Inspector Steve Pont said: "These robberies have been opportunistic. People have been walking alone, often at night, on their mobile phone or with their purse in their hand when they have been robbed.
"These crimes are rare but we would urge people to keep their belongings out of sight and be aware of their surroundings. Do not walk alone in the evening or at night and don't use secluded paths."
