In an operation aimed at tackling unsafe driving in Chesterfield, almost a hundred motorists were fined or cautioned for breaking the law.
 
Officers from the Clay Cross Safer Neighbourhood Teams, VOSA, CREST (Casualty Reduction Enforcement Support Team), the Environment Agency and taxi enforcement officers joined forces to carry out the action day along the A61 near Wingerworth.
 
70 drivers received Fixed Penalty Notices after being found to not be wearing their seatbelt, using a mobile phone while driving or for a range of defects on their cars.

A further 10 drivers with vehicles which had defects seriously affecting their roadworthiness were issued with prohibitions to stop them from going onto a public highway. They will not be allowed back on the road until the vehicle has been put through an MOT.

Taxi enforcement officers were also part of the operation - they discovered three unlicensed drivers operating as taxis and the Environment Agency discovered four people carrying waste and scrap metal without the correct licenses.

Further enquiries are to be made after the Department for Health and Social Security found five people committing benefit fraud.

Sergeant Sally Blaiklock, who is in charge of the Clay Cross SNT, said: "This is a great example of how partnership working between different enforcement agencies can really get results.

"Hopefully it will act as a warning to other drivers who break the law that we are regularly carrying out these operations to make our roads safer."

The initiative was carried out as part of Derbyshire Constabulary's Operation Relentless, which is a six-week partnership initiative aimed at tackling anti-social behaviour and alcohol related crime.

The operation runs between September 27 and November 8 and consists of six themed weeks.
