Appeal After Skate Park Bag Theft

Thursday 23rd September 2010
Police are appealing for witnesses after a 14-year-old girl's handbag was stolen while she was helping another teenager who had fallen and hurt himself.

The girl and her friend were at the Skate Park next to Spirewalk Business Park, Chesterfield, on Tuesday, September 21 at around 5pm when a skater fell and broke his arm.

The girl put her handbag down on a bench and went to help the young skater but when she returned her bag had gone.

Another person who was in the area at the time described the offender as a young man aged around 18, white, of slim build, around 5ft 6in tall and wearing a flat hat, black or blue jacket and blue jeans.

Sergeant Paul Carrington, who is in charge of the Chesterfield South Safer Neighbourhood Teams, said: "This girl was being a Good Samaritan and helping an injured person and someone has taken advantage of the situation and stolen her handbag. I would urge anyone with information to contact us."

Local police, councillors and residents at a community forum meeting in Hasland on Wednesday, September 22 discussed the issue of nuisance behaviour at the skate park.

Sgt Carrington added: "We are doing everything we can to ensure the skate park is kept safe for members of the public and the youngsters who genuinely want to use it for its designated purpose.

"We are working with local business owners to ensure our patrols are carried out when they are most needed to prevent any anti-social behaviour taking place and ensure anyone misusing it is dealt with appropriately and swiftly.

"We are also liaising with partner agencies to ensure we find the best way forward in terms of putting an end to the anti-social behaviour and littering issues."

If you have any information relating to this crime please call
PC Mick Hellewell of the Hasland and St Leonard's SNT on 0345 123 3333
