Bowlers Star For Derbyshire On Day Three

Derbyshire v Somerset LV= County Championship Div 1 - Day 3
Derbyshire 266 all out (86.2 overs) & 36 - 2 (10 overs) (5pts)
Somerset 216 all out (71.3 overs) (4pts)

On a day spoiled by the rain at the County Ground, Derbyshire did their best to stick their noses in front by quickly dismissing Somerset with a lead of 50 runs.

It was all thanks to Derbyshire's heroes of last season's title winning campaign. Both Tony Palladino and Tim Groenewald picked up their season best figures to obtain full bowling points for the Falcons.

It was all thanks to Derbyshire's heroes of last season's title winning campaign. Both Tony Palladino (above) and Tim Groenewald (below) worked hard and picked up their season best figures - both 'five-fors' - to earn full bowling points for the Falcons.

Tim Groenewald works hard on his way to his '5 for'

Play eventually got underway at 3.45pm - under threatening skies - and despite losing 52 overs in the day, there were still 44 overs available for either side to push themselves in front.

Derbyshire made an early breakthrough when Craig Meschede edged behind from the bowling by Groenewald. The former Warwickshire bowler was at it again, when he had Peter Trego clean bowled and Steven Kirby leg before to grab his fifth wicket.

Somerset were all out when Tony Palladino had Jamie Overton caught at first slip by Wes Durston. Palladino finished his spell with 5-97, his best figures of the season to date. Groenewald also completed his best bowling of the season with figures of 5-30.

Somerset's last four wickets fell for 36 runs in 13.3 overs leaving Derbyshire with a lead of 50 runs going into their second innings.

Derbyshire's Shivnarine Chanderpaul looks non too pleased at the weather so far - but all is set for him to start a good day at the crease tomorrow.
Derbyshire's Shivnarine Chanderpaul looks non too pleased at the weather so far - but all is set for him to start at the crease on a forecast fine last day

Their reply though, got off to an alarming start when Chesney Hughes fell first ball to Steven Kirby, the Anguillan got a leading edge to mid-off where Alfonso Thomas took the catch.

Incoming batsman Wayne Madsen survived an enthusiastic Somerset appeal for a caught behind from Kirby. This lead to some choice words between batsman and bowler, in particular between Billy Godleman and Jamie Overton, neither of whom were involved in the incident!

Despite finding the boundary with a couple of lovely shots, Madsen was next to go when he edged to wide third slip from Kirby again.

Nine balls later and with the floodlights on, the umpires deemed it too dark for play to continue. Close of play was eventually called just after 6pm with 18 overs left remaining in the day.

Our reporter Paul Fisher spoke with Tim Groenewald after close of play after Groenewald and Palladino had managed, for the first time since 1999 for a Derbyshire side, to be the only two bowlers to share all ten wickets.

Ironically, it was against Somerset at Derby, when current 1st XI coach AJ Harris joined Paul Aldred in sharing the wickets.

It was all thanks to Derbyshire's heroes of last season's title winning campaign. Both Tony Palladino and Tim Groenewald picked up their season best figures to obtain full bowling points for the Falcons.Groenewald (left) was quick to praise Palladino and have the partnership back that worked so well last season...
"You get opening partnerships that work well together, the pitch needed to be conducive to that to get wickets.

"This game, it's very much like last season and we did well. It's brilliant to have 'Dino back. He's infectious with his personality, you saw how he bats and with the ball he gets into good areas and hopefully, he kicks on."

With flat wickets previously at Headingley and at Trent Bridge, Groenewald was pleased that this wicket had something for him and his fellow bowlers...
"It's been a tough month or so, you run in all day and you have nothing to show for it, the guys who have been played have been frustrated but kept going. I've not had a second innings to bowl in nine championship matches.

"We've batted first in all eight games so far this season, and that's not normal - and it's only going to get tougher."

With Derbyshire 86 runs ahead and the weather set fair, Derbyshire need to work out a plan that doesn't see Somerset getting a chance of victory in this crucial game...
"We need a score on the board to work with, and time to bowl them out as well."
