Derbyshire's T20 Campaign got off to a winning start at Headingley tonight, although the manner of the win had all hearts racing, it was left to a Lancastrian at the home of Yorkshire cricket to hit the winning runs and start this season off with a cracker.
Derbyshire had bowled and fielded superbly well, with Albie Morkel's three over spell going for only nine runs and Mark Footitt grabbing his first three wickets in T20 cricket.
In response, Yorkshire bowled and fielded hard and, with Derbyshire cruising at one stage, Jack Brooks produced a spell of bowling that was quite sensational (4-21).
Derbyshire won the toss and elected to field first. That decision was proved a good one as in the second over, Morkel had the big wicket of Andrew Gale, who had been in fine form recently, caught at first slip by Wes Durston.
Morkel struck in his second over when Adam Lyth skied a top edge to Poynton, who almost missed the opportunity when he though Morkel was going for the catch. Derbyshire's start was made even better when Dan Redfern ran out Daniel Hodgson with a direct throw from mid-wicket.
Derbyshire struck again in the 8th over when Jonny Bairstow, in his only T20 appearance for Yorkshire this season, hooked Mark Footitt into the grateful hands of Tim Groenewald at fine leg for 12 from 15 balls. This was Footitt's first wicket in T20 cricket in only his third appearance.
Adil Rashid fell in the 10th over, wafting a shot to Poynton behind, from Footitt again. David Wainwright grabbed a wicket against his former club by clean bowling Richard Pyrah for 7.
Derbyshire's ground fielding was excellent and this resulted in another run out, when Liam Plunkett tried a quick single and Wayne Madsen's direct hit sent the former England man home.
Former Falcon Gary Ballance kept up his fine form against his former club by scoring 44 including three fours and one six, before he was caught at deep mid-wicket by Dan Redfern from Footitt again.
Yorkshire finished with a flourish by scoring twelve from the final over which was only the second highest of their innings, they closed on 119-8.
On a ground where he hit his massive 270 not out, Chesney Hughes blasted Jack Brooks for two fours and a six in the second over.
Richard Pyrah bowled a maiden over in the fifth, Wes Durston fell 7th over when he edged to backward point from the bowling of Pyrah.
The game was held up slightly in the 8th over when a streaker came onto the pitch!
Derbyshire then collapsed in the highest proportions.
Wes Durston who had earlier become Derbyshire's leading T20 run-scorer, fell cutting to backward point off Richard Pyrah for 14. Shivnarine Chanderpaul was caught behind from Pyrah again. Chesney Hughes chopped on from the bowling of Brooks, who then found his rhythm and had Wayne Madsen caught behind.
Tom Poynton was out caught by Hodgson from Brooks again, before Albie Morkel's long drive was caught superbly by Adam Lyth at long off.
Brooks came on for his final over and whilst he couldn't grab a wicket, only went for one run. Brooks' final figures were 4 overs for 21 with 4 wickets, the former Northamptonshire bowler managing to get all four wickets for six runs in his second spell.
Derbyshire, with five overs to go needed 43 runs, but with only three wickets remaining it was always going to be a tall order. Former Yorkshire player David Wainwright was given out LBW to former Derbyshire loanee Azim Rafiq for 7.
Derbyshire needed 18 from the final two overs, Jon Clare kept hitting two's into the gap, and kept Tim Groenewald off strike.
Derbyshire required six runs off the final over, but only needed three balls.
A full toss by Liam Plunkett enabled Jon Clare (left) to flick the ball to the boundary and the Lancastrian celebrated by punching the air.
Speaking to him afterwards, Jon Clare couldn't praise his partners David Wainwright and Tim Groenewald enough. He said, "As everything was going off around us, we just needed to be calm, so me and Wainers decided to just see through a couple of overs and take the sting out of it.
"When Tim came in, we needed something like 18 from the last two overs, we managed to keep hitting the two's. When we needed six off the last over I thought then is when we had it."
Derbyshire face Leicestershire tomorrow at Grace Road, Leicester. Start time 2.40pm.
