Local Man Peter Is Honoured For His 'Outstanding Contribution' To Charity

Thursday 29th October 2015

A local devoted father, who helped rebuild his son's life following a devastating brain injury, has been shortlisted for a national award for his dedication to helping other families affected.

Peter Shaw, 78 and from Chesterfield, is one of just three people from across the UK to be recognised at an national awards ceremony for The Stephen McAleese Outstanding Contribution to Headway Award for devoting 14 years service to local brain injury charity, Headway North Derbyshire.

Peter Shaw
(above), 78 and from Chesterfield, is one of just three people from across the UK to be recognised at an national awards ceremony for The Stephen McAleese Outstanding Contribution to Headway Award for devoting 14 years service to local brain injury charity, Headway North Derbyshire.

Peter was introduced to the local charity three years after his son Neal, who lives in Chesterfield, sustained a severe brain injury in a road traffic accident. Peter and his wife Jean became increasingly involved with Neal's care as his brain injury put enormous pressure on his life and relationships, eventually resulting in him moving into residential care where he received ongoing support.

Neal, now 50, was keen to maintain his independence and Peter worked closely with rehabilitation centres and care workers to help his son move into his own accommodation in 2002 along with specialist support. Peter also organised routine family weekends to ensure Neal was supported in having regular contact with his two then-very young children, Jack, now 21, and Mary, now 19.

With his parents support, Neal began attending and later volunteering at Headway's branch in Chesterfield, which supports local families affected by brain injury, as part of his rehabilitation.

With his parents support, Neal began attending and later volunteering at Headway's branch in Chesterfield, which supports local families affected by brain injury, as part of his rehabilitation. In 2002, Peter, who is a retired telecommunications manager, became Chair of the Headway branch, which later expanded to become Headway North Derbyshire. In addition to his committee duties, he has spent countless hours organising fundraising events, managing the group, supporting members and campaigning with local decision makers for better services.

Sadly, life for the Shaw family took a second incredibly difficult turn as Jean became seriously ill and tragically passed away.

Despite his ongoing personal challenges, Peter's devotion to Headway North Derbyshire never wavered and even today he continues to work tirelessly to support those in need of support or guidance after brain injury.

"I am overwhelmed and humbled to be nominated for such a prestigious award," said Peter. "Neal and my daughter Tracey are both very proud of me and, while Jean is not here to celebrate the awards ceremony with us, we know she will be with us all in spirit. It is particularly touching to be shortlisted for an award named after someone (Stephen McAleese) who Neal knew before Stephen sadly passed away as a result of his brain injury.

"None of this would have been possible without the incredible support my family received from Headway in Chesterfield in the early days of Neal's recovery. When I first joined the charity, the then-Chair, Roger Simpson was almost single-handedly running the branch. Today, Headway North Derbyshire has developed to the extent that its management and support services are provided by a dedicated team of volunteers, many of whom have personal experience of brain injury.

"We aim to raise public awareness of brain injury issues, including prevention and safety, develop Headway services and campaign for better service provision for brain injury survivors, their carers and families in North Derbyshire."

Peter was nominated by fellow volunteer and committee member, Neil Whiteley, who arranged a special meeting at Headway North Derbyshire to announce the good news.

"Ever since Peter became involved with Headway he has been a keen volunteer who very quickly became an integral cog in the local charity," said Neil.

"Peter leads Headway North Derbyshire with dignity and fairness, as a passionate and effective ambassador for Headway, who has achieved much and inspired many. He is so well respected that clients now dub him 'Mr Headway' for his ceaseless commitment to the cause.

"When Peter decides to retire, he will leave a large hole in the region as he truly has made an 'outstanding contribution' to Headway and touched the lives of so many families living with the effects of brain injury."

Each year, the Headway Annual Awards celebrate the exceptional efforts of survivors of brain injury, and those caring for and supporting them.

The Stephen McAleese Outstanding Contribution to Headway Award will be presented by double Olympic gold medallist and Headway Vice President James Cracknell, who himself has a brain injury, at a glittering ceremony in The Dorchester Hotel, London, on Friday 11th December. Awards for Carer, Volunteer and Achiever of the Year will also be presented.
