Recognition Given to Chesterfield's Top Gardeners

The 2010 Chesterfield in Bloom awards took place at the Ringwood Hall Hotel with several entrants competing for the competition’s highly regarded titles.

Young people from several schools across the Borough attended the afternoon presentation and children and staff at St Mary's Infant school (pictured below) were thrilled with their three first place wins for Best School Garden, Best Environmental Garden and Best School Hanging Basket.

St Mary's Infant School scoop's three top awards in Chesterfield in Bloom 2010The Mayor and Deputy Mayoress, Cllr Keith Morgan and Mrs Pat Morgan, presented trophies, certificates and prize money to winners in 14 categories including schools, pubs, allotments, businesses and local residents.

Mrs Jane Land of Walton, who entered the competition for the first time in 2010, scooped the Best Overall prize as well as first place in the large Best Back Garden category and second place for Best Front Garden.

Buckinghams won the hotly contested Best Blooming Pub/Restaurant title with The Prince of Wales pub coming second and the Barley Mow clinching third place.

Other winners included Pauline and Stewart Kay for Best Market Stall and John Brunt at West Ward Allotments for his allotment site.

Chesterfield Borough Council, who organise the competition, were delighted with this year's response from both the entrants and the sponsors. Cllr Ian Openshaw, Lead Member for Sustainability Communities and Climate Change said: "As always, we have been overwhelmed by the high quality, enthusiasm and commitment that many of our residents, local businesses and schools have given to the competition.

"We rely heavily on sponsorship to run the competition so a big thank you goes to all the local businesses who continue to support Chesterfield in Bloom. We also have to thank the judges who always have a hard job on deciding the final winners and to Council staff for their support in running the competition.  Everyone's efforts help to make Chesterfield a brighter and even better place to live, work and invest."

The competition's main sponsor is the Ringwood Hall HotelDavid Seton, Managing Director said: "This is our third year of sponsoring Chesterfield in Bloom and it's been terrific to see the competition going from strength to strength each year.

"There is a lot of effort put in by the entrants and they should all be applauded for the improvements they make to enhance the overall look of the town for residents and visitors."
