Local Libraries Help Residents To Recharge Their Batteries

Sunday 17th October 2010

We all know that a bit of time curled up with a good book can help us relax - now Chesterfield residents are being encouraged to recharge their batteries quite literally as they visit libraries this month.

DCC Asst Waste Management Development Officer Philippa Roine with Senior Library Manager Sue JacksonAs part of a scheme to encourage people to look after the environment by switching away from single-use batteries Derbyshire County Council has 500 AA battery and charger sets to give away each month for the next three months.

Batteries should never be thrown away with general rubbish. All Derbyshire libraries will have a battery bin installed from September so that residents can dispose safely of their used batteries when they pay a visit to the library. Lots of retailers that sell batteries - from pharmacies to supermarkets - now also have battery-recycling bins.

Derbyshire County Councillor John Allsop
, Member for Technology and Recycling, said: "Used batteries are bad news in landfill because they sit there forever and the valuable chemicals and metals cannot be recovered for recycling. Using rechargeable batteries means less waste and saves people money."

To be in with a chance of winning one of the 1,500 battery and charger sets, anyone living in Derbyshire (not Derby city) should fill in a form published in the September edition of the council's newspaper, Derbyshire First, or complete a form available in all county libraries.

Participants have to join the library or borrow a book, CD, DVD or audio book, or, if they already belong, they should simply borrow an item. They must take at least two spent household batteries (not car batteries) to their local library in October, November or December, hand in the form to the librarian and deposit their old batteries in the designated battery bin.

The county council will hold a monthly prize draw, picking a random 500 coupons in each month. Winners will be sent a letter which they will have to take to the library to collect their new charger and batteries.

For more information see Derbyshire First, which is delivered direct to Derbyshire homes. Or pick up a flyer from your local library in October, November or December.
