Giving Carers Care - Chesterfield 'Angels' Hit The One Year Mark

Monday 8th July 2013

They are the hidden army within Derbyshire - in fact, throughout the UK. 112,000 people in our county care for someone they love - someone with an illness or a disability, and many of those will be elderly or infirm themselves.

They are the hidden army within Derbyshire - in fact, throughout the UK. 112,000 people in our county care for someone they love - someone with an illness or a disability, and many of those will be elderly or infirm themselves.Sadly, many of those will at some point struggle to cope with 'coping', but many will remain too proud to seek help, and become ill themselves. Many of that number are not registered, believing that it is his or her 'duty' to care for someone close.

One year ago, an organisation was set up in Chesterfield to help to counter this by supporting and advising carers and providing opportunities for them to access services which may provide a vital lifeline for carers.

Their aim is simple - to signpost and provide support to carers via their own skills and services, but also to work in partnership with others to further recognise that carers play a huge role in the caring process and make gaining help easier.

Derbyshire Carers Association was formed 25 years ago by a carer who could not find the help he needed - and the organisation has continued to grow, with offices opening in Chesterfield last year (picture below).

1 year ago - Mrs Adams, the first carer on the centre's database cut the ribbon to open the Derbyshire Carer's Association Centre on West Bars, watched by CEO Helen Robinson (centre) and other members at the centre. 1 year ago - Mrs Adams, the first carer on the centre's database cut the ribbon to open the Derbyshire Carer's Association Centre on West Bars, watched by CEO Helen Robinson (centre) and other members at the centre.

Described as a 'vital' service, it's enjoyed backing from Chesterfield MP Toby Perkins, who has written to all GP's surgeries in the town, along with the NHS and Chesterfield College. There is also a drop in service Mon - Fri, 10am - 3pm, for anyone who just would like to talk to someone.

Helen Westin is Project Team Leader at the West Bars centre and, speaking to The Chesterfield Post, she told us that they have been, "Overwhelmed with the success - it's been fantastic! Everyone has been so welcoming and have recognised that, by working with us, they can reach lots of carers."

Helen concedes that the biggest hurdle to overcome is pride, "Many don't see themselves as carers, they think 'it's my husband or wife' or whatever and 'I love them and want them to have a good life' - it's a duty, rather than a role. We need to identify carers a lot earlier before their health and well being are affected."

The messages she hears are often the same, "It's not me with the illness, so I shouldn't complain that I could do with a break. We really to need to get those carers at the start of their caring journey to make sure they have all the help they need."

Richard Colgrave is a development worker at the centre and he admits he is amazed with what has been accomplished in the first year, "I was sceptical when I first started as I thought it was a huge undertaking to hit the whole of the area, but it's a three year project and, one third of the way in, we've already over-met the targets.

"We are in so many areas and we have 500 new carers, 78 of those alone were identified in carers week. The team has grown so much and to be able to do a project like this is absolutely fantastic. Toby Perkins MP says he will try and bring the issue up in the House of Commons and we'd like to thank the Dept of Health for their support."

Debra Dudley is a Care Assessment worker - and in daily contact with carers and their families.

She has this advice for any carer reading this and interested in finding out more, "Talk to someone! You are not on your own and there are things we can do, we treat all carers as individuals and try to meet their needs. Initially we will identify short term needs and we put strategies in place to help - then we look at medium and long term needs and help there."

Helen says that anyone wanting to help carers should also get in touch, "Volunteers are always welcome. We get lots of volunteers who were carers and want to give something back. We have a volunteering lady in the Amber Valley who was a district nurse, so has the skills needed - and we work with Chesterfield College (one of their students, Anna, a Level 3 business studies student on an apprenticeship, was with us in the interview), and we are working with student nurses to help them to see the impact of what we do from the outset."

Having made much head way in their first year, the aim for the organisation now is to develop a system for referrals and to continue the work already begun in consultation with an NHS keen to give carers a voice within health, to find out what could be done better for carers in the health system.

And the impact of their work? Richard summed it up in one sentence, "I was talking to a lady the other day who described us as 'angels' ."
