New Local Area Coordinators To Strenghten Support In The County

Saturday 11th June 2016

Dozens of people are set to benefit from the expansion of a Derbyshire County Council initiative called Local Area Coordination (LAC) that is now up and running in two areas of Bolsover.

Dozens of people are set to benefit from the expansion of a Derbyshire County Council initiative called Local Area Coordination (LAC) that is now up and running in two areas of Bolsover.

People with disabilities or mental ill health, older and younger adults, their families and carers are all set to benefit from the scheme.

LAC helps people to help themselves and will support them in the short or long term to build a better life.

Two Local Area Coordinators are now in post covering the Pinxton/South Normanton and Creswell areas of the district.

Paula DeGirolamo and Hazel Freeborn are already working one-to-one with 30 people in their areas to help them find their own solutions to their issues.

Paula DeGirolamo
(above left) and Hazel Freeborn (above right) are already working one-to-one with 30 people in their areas to help them find their own solutions to their issues.

They work closely with people in the community and focus on their strengths and talents to help them build networks of community support, so that over time, they are able to reduce or prevent their need for formal care services.

Local Area Coordinators have an in-depth knowledge of what is available in their 'patch' and can help in a number of ways, including:

  • Access to information and advice
  • Helping people to find their way around social care and health systems
  • Finding practical ways of doing the things they want or need to do
  • Developing and using local contacts to feel part of their community
  • Planning for the future
  • Getting the right services at the right time, if required.

Derbyshire County Council Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care Councillor Paul Smith said: With more pressure than ever being put on our social care and health services, it's important that we help residents to help themselves to live safely and well.Derbyshire County Council Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care Councillor Paul Smith (left), said: "With more pressure than ever being put on our social care and health services, it's important that we help residents to help themselves to live safely and well.

"If people are struggling, maybe for reasons of ill health or loss of mobility, our Local Area Coordinators can work with them to build their trust and confidence, get them involved with their local community and find practical low-cost solutions to their problems.

"That's what LAC is all about - focusing on people's strengths instead of their needs and giving them the tools and information they need to stay strong and independent."

There is no formal referral process to meet a Local Area Coordinator. People can be introduced to their Local Area Coordinator in a number of ways, including through their local GP surgery, through friends and family or even their local shop.

Residents can find out more about Local Area Coordination or can be put in touch with their Local Area Coordinator by contacting Derbyshire County Council service manager Marie Billyeald at marie.billyeald@derbyshire.gov.uk
