Roll Up, Roll Up For The Big Summer Read

Monday 18th July 2011

Some good news for parents who are wondering how to entertain their kids for the next six weeks with news that Big Top treats are being lined up in Derbyshire libraries this summer with some circus razzamatazz for young readers.

Circus skills workshops, talks by a popular children's writer, cartooning, storytimes and crafts are among the FREE events organised by Derbyshire County Council libraries for this year's Summer Reading Challenge.

This year's theme is Circus Stars, as children between 4 and 12 are encouraged to read six library books throughout the summer holidays.

Everyone taking up the challenge will receive a colourful, cutout circus stage with stickers to collect to complete the stage and mark their success.

There will also be giveaways on a circus theme including scratch and sniff stickers, yoyos, bookmarks, a wristband and fridge magnet.

An interactive Circus Stars website where children can play games, create an avatar and talk about their favourite books is also part of the fun at www.circus-stars.org.uk Anyone completing the challenge will get a medal and certificate.

Last summer, more than 9,000 Derbyshire youngsters took part in the challenge and Derbyshire County Council leader and cabinet member for culture Councillor Andrew Lewer is hoping even more will take it this year.

He said: "The summer holidays are almost upon us and if you are looking for something fun to do, why not bring your children or grandchildren to your local library.

"Taking part in the challenge costs nothing and there are freebies and giveaways to collect.

"There are also lots of fun events related to the challenge for children to enjoy and an interactive website for any rainy days."

He added: "Reading is a vital and enjoyable skill and we should all do what we can to encourage it among the county's youngsters. Joining the challenge could help inspire a life-long love of books."
