Sir Chris Hoy Urges Chesterfield Residents To 'Shine' This Summer

Wednesday 16th May 2012

Four-time Olympic Champion, Sir Chris Hoy (below) has urged Chesterfield residents to take to the streets on June 29th as the London 2012 Torch Relay comes to town.

Four-time Olympic Champion, Sir Chris Hoy has urged Chesterfield residents to take to the streets on June 29th as the London 2012 Torch Relay comes to town.Beginning in Lands End on May 19th, the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay will cross the UK, travelling within 10 miles of 95% of the UK population on its way to the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games on July 27th.

Among those carrying the Olympic flame in Chesterfield will be Lloyds TSB Torchbearer John Stamp, 62, a community stalwart who helped turned an abandoned mine into a community area in his home village of Ripley.

Lloyds TSB, as the National Presenting Partner of the Relay, are helping to take the inspiration of the Olympic Flame to communities across the UK, past their doorsteps, into their schools and along their high streets.

"The 2012 Torch Relay is going to be a huge event - the Olympic Games are not just about London, it's about the whole country," said Lloyds TSB Ambassador Sir Chris. "It's an opportunity for every community to experience the London Olympic Games and support their torchbearers.

"The Lloyds TSB Torchbearers running in your community have all worked incredibly hard already to be nominated and recognised for making a difference in their community.

"Now that the eyes of the world will be on them as they carry the Flame, they will want to ensure that they are confident in their ability to deliver.

"Knowing that you can handle the Torch for your 300m in the spotlight will help you make the most of your moment and enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime experience."

Stamp is one of just 8,000 people to carry the London 2012 Torch courtesy of Lloyds TSB.

A survey has shown that people who will help carry the Flame around the UK have been warming up with everyday household objects.

Around 45% of Torchbearers claimed that they will be practicing at home with a rolling pin, as they consider it to be the closest object in size, shape and weight to the London 2012 Torch.

And 25% admitted training with a rolled up newspaper, whilst a further 20% were relying on their hairbrush as a Torch substitute.

"Practice makes perfect, and whilst we're not advocating that everyone should be as fit as an Olympian to run with the Torch, it's great people have been practicing," added Sir Chris Hoy.
