'Tis The Season To Recycle...

Wednesday 28th December 2011

Derbyshire County Council is urging people to remember to recycle their rubbish after Christmas and over the New Year.

Councillor John Allsop, Cabinet Member for Technology and Recycling
, said: "We often generate more rubbish at this time of year. It's important to recycle as much as we can so that it doesn't end up in landfill."

TREES
Once Christmas is over you can recycle or compost your real Christmas tree by:

  • Placing it in your garden waste bin (if you have one). It may be necessary to break/saw the tree into a manageable size for the bin or place it next to your bin on collection day. Contact your local city, district or borough council to check whether you can do this.

  • Taking it to a Christmas tree recycling collection point in your area. Contact your local city, district or borough council to find out if they are offering this service.

  • Taking it to your nearest household waste recycling centre. It will then be composted along with other garden materials.

CARDS
Many district or borough councils will now take Christmas cards for cardboard recycling. But decorated, foil-backed or musical cards will not be accepted. Check with your district or borough council for details.

Plain greetings cards can also be taken to your nearest household waste recycling centre.

Also look out for Christmas card recycling schemes in your local supermarkets and stores in the New Year.

For example, Marks and Spencer offers Christmas card recycling during January 2012 marksandspencer.com/about/partnerships/woodland-trust.

WRAPPING PAPER
Save paper to use again. Or check with your district or borough council whether you can recycle wrapping paper in your doorstep paper collections.

OTHER RUBBISH
We can often get through more bottles, jars, tins and cardboard packaging over Christmas than at other times of the year. Please remember to recycle them.
