Battling Reds Show Character

Thursday 8th December 2011

Alfreton Town manager Nicky Law praised his side's desire after seeing them come from behind to beat fellow Blue Square Bet Premier Division strugglers Newport County 3-2 at the Impact Arena on Tuesday night.

Jake Moult scored the second for AlfretonThe Reds fell behind after just four minutes but battled back to lead 2-1 at half-time. Newport levelled just before the hour but after that Alfreton came to the fore with another display of character.

"Over the last few weeks we have shown a lot of character in games and shown a lot of spirit to come from behind.

"We have possibly played better and lost over the same time span but against Newport we showed a load of character because we needed the win and got it" said Law.

Alfreton remain in the 2nd from bottom position, but the Reds are now unbeaten in their last 3 home games which have yielded 7 points from 9 and they have closed the gap on the pack above them.

Law added: "We were delighted with the result as much as the performance. It was a game we knew we had to win, especially with Hayes winning and others picking points up."

"Newport Manager Justin Edinburgh complimented us after the game, saying we were as good as - and had caused them as many problems - as some of the other teams they have played since he took over and that includes the likes of Luton.

"We obviously know we have areas we need to improve in and we are working on that. January brings another option and that is something we are looking at as well.

"And even though the winning goal was somewhat scrappy, there was plenty of quality about our first two.

"The quality of the ball in from Josh [Law] and the determination of Anthony Church's run brought about a good first goal.

"The second one was great execution from Jake Moult (pictured above). They were both very good goals. The third one should have been caught by their keeper but once again Nathan Jarman was in the right place at the right time.

"It is coming to the point now where he [Jarman] is making us seriously think about starting him."

This Saturday the Reds are at home again when Blue Square Bet Premier Division rivals Southport visit the Impact Arena to contest an FA Trophy first round tie.

Supporters should note this is an all pay game.

Should a replay be necessary, this will take place at Haig Avenue next Tuesday, December 13th, and the scheduled Derbyshire Senior Cup third round tie at Gresley FC would then require a new date.
