Staveley MWFC 2 - 2 Lincoln Moorlands Railway

The points were shared in this entertaining encounter in which Staveley were the better team and created enough chances to win the game.

However, simple defensive errors were to prove costly and their winless run in the league now stretches to 12 games.

Manager Neil Cluxton made a number of changes from the team that performed so well at Sheffield FC on the previous Thursday with Pat Lindley, Lee Naughton, Ben Kistell and Michael Trench restored to the starting line up.

There was also a welcome return to Inkersall Road for Andrew Fox who followed up his man of the match display on Thursday with another good game.

The visitors were in 20th place in the league before today's game and desperate for points in their survival battle.

As with many teams in this position, they appeared to base their play around petty fouls and didn't attempt to play any flowing football.

Staveley took the lead after 13 minutes when Michael Trench made put in a great cross which Jamie Smith (left) met with a sweet right foot drive from ten yards that gave Lincoln goalkeeper Craig Turner no chance.

Lincoln equalised on 35 minutes when Staveley were guilty of poor marking from a corner and Steven John scored with a simple header at the near post.

Then on 39 minutes Lincoln's Jake Cass crashed a 25 yard free kick against the cross bar with Danny Herring beaten.

Lincoln scored within 10 seconds of the restart when a speculative cross-cum-shot from Tony Law caught Danny Herring out and the ball went over his head into the goal. Herring made amends later on with a great point blank save.

Staveley appeared shaken for a few minutes but dug deep and responded.

They created numerous chances with Andrew Fox, Ryan Damms (twice) and Pat Lindley all coming close; the latter beat 4 players in a mazy dribble and his strong shot beat the goalkeeper but went narrowly wide.

Lincoln also had chances, although Staveley defended well and won most of the high balls with Ashley Emson enjoying a good game. Lindley also had to throw his body in the way to cut out a scoring opportunity whilst Danny Claridge gave another assured performance at left back.

Staveley's defensive play has improved over the last few games and midfielder Jamie Smith was the best example of this as he kept up a high work rate and whenever possible, came back to protect his defenders.

As Cluxton changed tactics with his substitutions, Smith also proved his versatility and played in three different areas of the midfield during the game.

On 71 minutes, Staveley came very close to equalizing when a Lewis Jackson volley from 30 yards crashed back off he bar; it was a great example of skill and he adopted a perfect body shape to get full power behind the shot which was worthy of a goal.



Staveley deservedly equalised after 76 minutes when substitute Sean Dickinson scored with a quality shot from the edge of the box (pictured above) that gave the goalkeeper no chance.

The home side had further chances to take all three points and substitute Oliver Woodhead, who helped give Staveley the edge in midfield with his heading and tackling ability, nearly won it when he headed a Jamie Smith free kick wide in injury time.

Staveley MWFC's next game is away at Maltby Main on Saturday 20th April, kick off 3pm.

Next home game is against Hall Road Rangers on Saturday 27th April, kick off 3pm.
