Reds In The Middle Of A Bleak Mid-Winter

Wednesday 8th February 2012

Alfreton Town's twice-postponed FA Carlsberg Trophy third round tie at Gateshead has left the club looking at a very bleak mid-winter period in terms of incoming revenue.

Alfreton Town FC In The Middle Of A Bleak Mid-WinterLast Saturday's game was postponed due to a frozen pitch at Gateshead's International Stadium and then rearranged for Tuesday which also fell to the freezing elements. Tuesday should have seen a money spinning home league game against Mansfield Town and that has now been rearranged for Tuesday, March 13th.

The trophy tie at Gateshead has been moved to next Tuesday, 14th February, meaning another scheduled home league game, this time against Stockport County, has had to be moved and this has now been confirmed for Tuesday, March 6th.

The Reds now only have one scheduled home game in all competitions in the month of February with beleaguered Darlington due to visit the Impact Arena on Saturday, February 18th.

Weather permitting, and assuming Darlington are still operational after all their recent financial upheavals - including going into administration and having ten points deducted from this season's total - the Reds will be very much in need of this fixture (the only home game in a 28-day span) going ahead.

The last home game back on January 21st against Kidderminster Harriers seems a very long time ago considering there will have been four weeks of wages and four weeks of expenses to find just to keep the club ticking along.

The club have only played two games since, both of them away.

This Saturday sees a long trip to Kent to face Ebbsfleet United before the Reds hopefully travel to Gateshead next Tuesday at the third attempt.

The winners of the Trophy tie will pick up a not-to-be-sniffed at £7,000 in prize money and a trip to Luton Town on February 25th in the fourth round of the competition.

Luton triumphed 2-1 at Kidderminster Harriers on Tuesday evening.

That tie is probably the biggest pay day possible left in the last eight of the competition for Nicky Law's side as gates receipts are shared after expenses have been deducted.

The motivation for the Reds is to beat Gateshead for the first time in three games this season. The Tynesiders have taken four out of six points from Alfreton in Blue Square Bet Premier Division action this season, so it is to be hoped it is third time lucky for Nicky Law's side.

This Saturday's trip to Ebbsfleet will see Nicky Law without four of his squad, two injured and two suspended.

Goalkeeper Joe Day is still battling to overcome a groin strain whilst Leigh Franks is suffering with a recurrence of a hamstring injury which plagued him earlier in the campaign.

On top of that, central defender Adam Quinn is still to finish a two-match suspension and on-loan striker Louis Moult also has to finish a three-game ban.

Indeed, Moult's month-long loan is up the day after the Ebbsfleet game and it remains to be seen if his loan spell will be extended beyond February 12th.

The brother of Reds midfield man Jake, Louis has made one-and-a-half appearances for the club, the half coming in his second outing when he was sent off against Kidderminster just before half-time.

Alfreton Town Supporters' Association transport to Ebbsfleet United departs at 9am and it is a 3.45pm start for Gateshead on Tuesday. Seats can be booked by contacting Mark Thorpe on 01773 836251
