Staveley MWFC Grab The Win Against Glasshoughton Welfare

Staveley were made to fight for their first three points of the season by a hard-working Glasshoughton side but their first half performance was enough to give them the victory.Staveley were made to fight for their first three points of the season by a hard-working Glasshoughton side but their first half performance was enough to give them the victory.

Manager Neil Cluxton
made two changes from the team that was beaten comprehensively at Bridlington last weekend with Matt Thorpe and Jake Vernon coming into the starting eleven.

Glasshoughton, who didn't play last weekend, started brightly and Staveley goalkeeper Dan Tollerfield had to be alert after only two minutes to claim the ball at the feet of a Glasshoughton forward.

The all-important goal came after eleven minutes and after some excellent attacking football.

Man of the Match, Michael Trench collects a 40 yard pass from Josh Scully to cross for Nathan Whitehead to score

It was started by Josh Scully in his own half who played a perfect 40-yard pass for Man of the Match, Michael Trench to run onto and Trench's cross was met by Nathan Whitehead who slid in to score from two yards out, despite pressure from a defender (below).

1-0

Throughout the first half, Josh Scully, formerly an apprentice at Chesterfield FC, was at the heart of Staveley's best moves as he showed good awareness and vision.

Full-back Michael Trench also caught the eye both with his positional awareness in defence and his willingness to get forward and support his forwards.

Indeed, Glasshoughton forward Joel Freestone, who had scored several goals in pre-season games and was regarded as the 'danger man', never got a scoring opportunity and the pacy forward was withdrawn in the second half.

Staveley should have increased their lead before half time but lacked a clinical finishing touch.

Firstly Ryan Damms had a chance after 16 minutes but saw his close range shot blocked, then Jake Vernon had a chance on 33 minutes but a poor first touch prevented him getting round the keeper.

Glasshoughton also had chances of their own and on 36 minutes, Tollerfield was forced to make a smart save, Michael Trench clearing the subsequent shot off the goal line.

HT: 1-0

In fairness, the majority of the second half belonged to Glasshoughton who kept the ball better than the home side, although for all their possession, they failed to force a save from Dan Tollerfield in the Staveley goal.

The most pleasing thing from this half was the way Staveley defended, despite the pressure with Luke Beatson dominant in the air.

Josh Scully, formerly an apprentice at Chesterfield FC, was at the heart of Staveley's best moves as he showed good awareness and vision.
Josh Scully (right), formerly an apprentice at Chesterfield FC, was at the heart of Staveley's best moves as he showed good awareness and vision.

Staveley
did make half-chances of their own as Beatson headed narrowly wide from a Scully free kick after 47 minutes and Ryan Damms had a chance near the end.

The introduction of substitute Jordan Turner, signed on Tuesday from Shirebrook Town, also added more energy and pace upfront.

However, the home-side were guilty of giving the ball away too cheaply on many occasions, which only increased the tension for themselves and the crowd as the game moved into the dying minutes.

But they did hold on and they now sit in 15th place after two games with three points.

FT: 1-0

An initial assessment is that the team's performance was much improved from the second half of last season - particularly in defence.

As the players become more familiar with each other, then some of the attacking football that they played in this game should result in more goals.

Overall then, it has been a promising start for Staveley MWFC to the 2013-14 season.

Staveley now turn their attention to the FA Cup, with a home tie against Ashton Town on Saturday 17th August, 3pm kickoff.

They then entertain much-fancied Brighouse Town on August Bank Holiday Monday, 3pm kickoff.

STAVELEY MWFC:
Dan Tollerfield, Rob Ludlam, Michael Trench, Josh Scully, Luke Beatson,
James Colliver, Jamie Smith (c), Matt Thorpe, Ryan Damms, Jake Vernon, Nathan Whitehead

Substitutes: Jordan Turner (for Vernon, 61 mins), Pat Lindley, Ben Kistell,
Liam Osborne

Weather: 20 degrees, a pleasant summer's evening with an occasional rain shower

Pitch: Good but with occasional uneven bounce

Staveley goal: Whitehead

Staveley man of the match: Michael Trench

Next Home Games

Saturday, 17th August (3pm) - Ashton (FA Cup extra-preliminary round)
Bank Holiday Monday, 26th August (3pm) - Brighouse Town (League)
