Holocaust Memorial Day Commemorated At Town Hall

Friday 27th January 2012

Chesterfield Borough Council has marked the twelfth annual Holocaust Memorial Day - Friday, 27th January - by placing a Book of Commitment in the foyer of the Town Hall.

Holocaust Memorial Day Commemorated At Chesterfield Town Hall

The Mayor of Chesterfield, Cllr Peter Barr (above with the Mayoress)
, Cllr John Burrows, Leader of Chesterfield Borough Council, Cllr Ray Russelll Leader of the Opposition group of the Council and Huw Bowen, Chief Executive of the Council were the first to add their signatures to the book.

The book will be available for members of the public to sign from Holocaust Memorial Day until Friday 3rd February. Members of the public are free to come in and write their personal message of remembrance in memory of all the people who suffered Nazi persecution during the Second World War.

The Mayor of Chesterfield, Cllr Peter Barr told The Chesterfield Post, "It's been recognised for the last twelve years and a lot of that has been brought about by the recent atrocities we've had through the world so, as well as the older members of society who can obviously remember the last atrocities, equally in recent years we've had similar situations.

"This day does recognise the suffering that's taken place in recent times and is one of those occasions where the town comes together. The Town Hall has recognised this and people can come and show their respect, so we never forget.

"We look back at Germany during the 30's and see how the seeds of racism can start - it only needs a small group of people to set this going and it's a big danger when people start incidents which can get out of hand."

Chesterfield's MP Toby Perkins also spoke with us about what today means for everyone, "I think it's vitally important that people don't forget - and it stands there as a permanent reminder of what can happen when good people don't do enough to stop bad people having their way.

"I think at a time such as now, when there are economic difficulties right across the world, it's often a fertile breeding ground for the far right - we've learned these lessons from the 1930's and the past - and it provides a valuable reminder that we should never succumb to those sorts of things.

"For that reason, I'm pleased to announce that I'll be visiting Auschwitz at the end of February with a group of young people from Chesterfield College and others, as part of the programme to make sure that people are educated about the horrors of what's happened in the past."

Cllr John Burrows was also at the signing of the book along with Chief Exec Huw Bowen and Cllr Ray Russell
Cllr John Burrows (seated) at the signing of the book along with Cllr Ray Russell (centre) and Council Chief Executive, Huw Bowen

Cllr John Burrows
was also at the signing of the book and said, "Today's important as we need to make sure that the new generation remember what the holocaust was all about - terrible losses for Jewish People as a consequence of the Nazi regime.

"Signing this book is for us today, an Act of Remembrance. It is for young people an act of remembrance today, an act of remembering history and learning from that history. It's a commitment from everyone today to ensure that there isn't a repeat of that history - this country, this world, cannot afford to have the terrible difficulties that were recognised by everyone at that particular time."
