Fitness At Christmas

Wednesday 17th December 2014
by Kay Adkins

They tell me that it is just under two weeks to Christmas Day on the Radio this morning and the pace of shopping, cleaning, decorating, planning are all stepping up but what about my fitness campaign? They tell me that it is just under two weeks to Christmas Day on the Radio this morning and the pace of shopping, cleaning, decorating, planning are all stepping up but what about my fitness campaign?

I can't say it is stepping up like the other things in my life - but thanks to an online training programme - I have joined for December - a Christmas Countdown - I am keeping going. I don't know about you but these grim, dark mornings are a real killer to motivation for me and Jack (remember him from my last Blog HERE?).

We all need to find something to help us retain what motivation we may have as everything around us tempts us into a multitude of naughtiness. I am sat in the Hub's Cafe writing this and the cakes, Christmas gingerbread men and delicious hot chocolate are all winking at me and saying "come on, eat me". Well, I guess one won't harm will it?

And the answer is no, especially if you are maintaining a healthy diet and your exercise programme the rest of the time.

However, just think of all the fitness gains you will lose if you just throw caution to the wind in December, stop exercising and eat 'til the cream starts coming out of your ears!

January will feel like a very grim month if the weather is bad, there is nothing to look forward to AND you have to climb back up that fitness and weight loss ladder.

Still not convinced? Well lets bring it a little closer in shall we?

I have my first Christmas 'do' tomorrow and if I had not kept doing something, that little black dress would be only a dream outfit. Those of that know me will probably be sniggering now as it is highly unlikely that I would wear a little black dress but I, as I am sure you do, have my own equivalent which still needs some work to get into.

I will enjoy my evening but then go back to my programme as if I thought getting into the 'party frock' for this event was difficult, just think how hard it will be two or three events down the line and, to boot, my glamorous New Year outfit will have been a waste of money!

Where I am going with this is, that internal motivation, you know the stuff - "I am doing this for me, my health and my wellbeing" - is the best motivation we can have but sometimes, especially when the might of all of the multi national retailers are pitted against us, we need a bit of external help such as, "I have already bought my dress and it will be a waste of money if I can't fit in it" and "I will look terrible if my bulges grow over the next couple of weeks".

I am sure you can find your own mantra when that gooey muffin is calling you or "I can't be bothered to go for a walk today" is the loudest internal voice in your head.

Just to help you along a little, these are my prompts in December:

  • I had set myself a weight loss target to achieve before Christmas and I am very close to achieving it - I do NOT want to miss this target.

  • I have a daily nudge from my online coach.

  • When I cannot face the dark mornings to exercise in, I head to the Spireites Health & Fitness Club, as it is just the right temperature and it has lights and TV!

  • I will not fit in my Christmas and New Year outfits if I weaken.

All or even just one of those help me if I am having a moment of weakness which, I am sad to say, happen often (you want to try working near a delicious cafe with the smells wafting into your office!)

What are your 'crutches' to help you through?

For me, being fit is a combination of what I eat and the exercise I do, probably in equal measures. However, next week I will be taking a look at diet as we are launching the Spireites Weight Loss Challenge which will take place in the New Year.

It will have an exciting support programme with it but you will have to wait for the details. Talk to you all soon.
