Staveley MWFC 2 - 5 Heanor Town

Heanor Town dished out a footballing lesson to the home side on Saturday, as Staveley gave their worst performance for some time, in a game where all their current shortcomings were cruelly exposed.

The score line certainly did not flatter the visitors, for whom Kieran Debrouwer scored a hat trick.

Staveley Manager Neil Cluxton must now work with the players and eliminate the basic errors that were seen in this game, in particular, woeful distribution which resulted in giving the ball away unnecessarily time after time.



Cluxton handed a debut to Chris Dickman, (above) signed this week from Maltby, who was given a position in the middle of a three-man defence.

Chris gave a hardworking, Staveley Man of the Match performance, although he may not always please the football purist with his reliance on long balls upfield.

Missing were Thorpe and Vernon (suspended), Rowley and Wafula (injured), whilst Phil Austin had work commitments.

Nathan Benger has now signed permanently for Heanor, although was not allowed to play in this game. Heanor themselves were fielding several new players signed from higher league teams in the Evostik league, although sometimes, it can take time for new faces to gel.

The match was watched by a crowd of 212, the highest of the season so far at Inkersall Road and they were certainly given value for their money with seven goals.

The first action of note came after 8 minutes when a Jared Holmes' shot hit the crossbar but the visitors did open the scoring soon after, when Kieran Debrouwer took the ball down well and flicked it past Ashley Foyle and then placed a firm shot in the bottom right hand corner.

Foyle then had Staveley's best chances of the half when two powerful headers from successive corners were cleared off the line by Heanor defenders. However, he was then at fault shortly afterwards when he underhit an intended back pass and Matthewson, having been beaten by the Heanor forward, gave up too easily. Two Heanor forwards had the goal at their mercy with only Chris Dickman on the line to beat but fortunately, the shot was close enough to Dickman for him to stretch out a leg and clear the ball.

On 32 minutes the referee awarded Staveley a penalty after Jordan Turner appeared to have been fouled. However the referee, Stuart Richardson, then consulted his assistant who advised that there was no contact between Turner and the defender. Mr Richardson then reversed his decision and booked Turner for 'simulation'.

Whilst the right decision was eventually reached, two questions do arise.

Firstly, why did the referee not check with his assistant before making his decision?

Secondly, a Heanor player pushed the referee immediately after the initial decision yet no further action was taken?

The visitors then dominated the final ten minutes off the half and Ash Foyle had to clear the ball off the line after Heanor's Gerard Moran had gone round Laurence Matthewson very easily.

They then forced three quick corners and, from one of these, Luke Beatson cleared the ball off the line. Staveley were then fortunate when another shot hit the bar.

The second half was a lesson in how not to defend, with six goals being scored and a number of other chances missed as Heanor enforced their superiority.

Staveley had to re-arrange early in the half when full back Michael Trench suffered a re-occurrence of a calf injury and was replaced by Rob Ludlam. As a result, the adaptable Nick Hague moved across left wing back with Ludlam on the right hand side.

Laurence Matthewson had already had to make an early save but was powerless to stop Debrouser's second goal after 56 minutes when Heanor exploited the space down Staveley's right hand side.

The match was effectively over ten minutes later when Rob Ludlam was beaten on the byeline and, when the ball was crossed, Matthewson's attempted clearance fell straight to Heanor's Daniel Williams, who accepted the gift.

At that point it is fair to say that quite a few Staveley players stopped giving the required commitment and Heanor scored further goals through substitute Joshua Marshall and then Kieran Debouwer completed his hat trick. This was Debrouwer's third hat trick in four games, surely a man in form.

Staveley showed some fight and were able to pull back two goals through Ryan Damms and Pat Lindley, the latter's header from a cross by Damms.

Substitute Nathan Whitehead also had a late chance but after being set up by Jamie Smith and executing a neat turn, his shot went over the bar.
