Staveley v Albion Sports Tonight - FREE Admission - Plus Parkgate Report

Wednesday 12th March 2014

Staveley MWFC Chairman Terry Damms has announced that tonight's home fixture against Albion Sports is to be FREE admission for all.Staveley MWFC Chairman Terry Damms has announced that tonight's home fixture against Albion Sports is to be FREE admission for all.

The generous gesture was originally planned for the rescheduled date of 15th January, after the previous game on 20th December 2013, was abandoned after 62 minutes after a torrential downpour (STORY HERE) - but now the ' re - rescheduled' game definitely goes ahead at Inkersall Road tonight, kick off 7:45pm.

Terry Damms said of the second cancelled game back in January, "It is really disappointing and frustrating that we had to postpone the game with Albion Sports FC.

Heavy rain raised the water table where pools of water were in many areas of the pitch and rain forecast meant there was no other decision to be made at the time" and has come good on the promise that, "We will honour the free admission again."

So tonight's the night for that third time lucky fixture - and Staveley hope to see a bumper crowd to take advantage of the FREE admission at Inkersall Road, kick off 7:45pm.

Meanwhile, Staveley's game on Saturday away at Parkgate FC saw a 3-1 "one of those games" defeat when the Welfare should have earned at least a point for their performance.

Parkgate v Staveley Match Report

by Steven Hall

Parkgate FC 3-1 Staveley MWFC
Toolstation NCEL League, Premier Division
Roundwood Park, Saturday 8th March, ko 3pm

The positive feeling emanating from the many Staveley Miners Welfare supporters, following their team's recent good form, soon evaporated at Roundwood Park when defensive hesitation led to an early Parkgate goal.

A through ball, which neither defender James Colliver cleared or keeper Tom Turner came for, was seized upon by Piers Bond whose weak shot somehow trickled in at the far post with only two minutes on the stop watch.

1-0

Recent performances would suggest that Staveley would soon get to grips with the game and even though a goal down, there was still more than enough time to get all three points - and they set about that task.

Josh Scully found the head of Oli Ryan, who headed towards goal but the home keeper Dave Reay, saved comfortably.

Michael Trench then hit a looping cross (or maybe a shot?) which had the keeper back peddling but again, he saved comfortably.

Matt Thorpe, back in the starting lineup, was bossing the midfield and moving through the gears he went past three Parkgate players like they weren't there.

The fourth jumped in with both feet missed the ball and, thankfully, Thorpe.

The advantage could have been given but wasn't (and this happened for most of the match) and the resultant free kick was taken too quickly and came to nothing.

The closest Staveley came in the first half saw the ball actually end up in the net after Jamie Smith and the goalkeeper collided.

Jack Woolley replaced Ryan on 28 minutes after the inform striker, chasing a long clearance up field, pulled up with a hamstring injury that looks likely to keep him out for a while. The ball broke free and Smith got up first (as you would expect) and put the ball in the net, only for it to be disallowed for a foul; the referee then booked Trench and Thorpe for their protests.

It certainly looked like a challenge between two committed players with only eyes for the ball but the better placed officials thought otherwise.

Jack Woolley replaced Ryan (left), on 28 minutes, after the inform striker, chasing a long clearance up field, pulled up with a hamstring injury that looks likely to keep him out for a while.

Other chances followed: Wes Hill's attempted square pass across goal following a pass just inside the right back from Scully was cut out by the keeper; Trench's run and shot that whistled just past the post; and a move that can only be described as "pass-pass-pass-pass" ended with Nick Hague shooting straight at the keeper.

The performance all gave encouragement to Staveley followers in the crowd that the 1-0 halftime deficit would soon be rectified.

HT: 1-0

Staveley piled on the pressure in the second half and came close, early on to getting the equaliser when Matt Thorpe broke into the right side of the area, hit a powerful shot across the keeper but it went high and just over the angle.

However, they finally got the equaliser just after the hour.

A free kick was won by Michael Trench after he was sandwiched between two Parkgate players. Trench took the kick and found the head of Pat Lindley to score his sixth goal of the season (and second against Parkgate).A free kick was won by Michael Trench after he was sandwiched between two Parkgate players. Trench took the kick and found the head of Pat Lindley (left), to score his sixth goal of the season (and second against Parkgate).

1-1

Staveley then set about trying to grab the winner but only really created a couple of half chances and it was the home side that nearly took the lead midway through the half, but for a brilliant save from Tom Turner diving at the feet of the striker, just as it looked like he'd taken it round him.

Apart from the goal, a dogged and determined Parkgate had created very little all afternoon, mainly because Adam Jukes, who was making his debut in the centre of defence, got his head to everything Parkgate threw at Staveley, a display which rightly earned him the man of the match award.

Just as the game looked to be petering out with the scoreline being just about right, yet another defensive mixup cost the Welfare the game.

Turner threw the ball out to Scully, who was quickly set upon by Scott Preece. Scully's weak back pass was intercepted by Preece who despite Turner - who was left in the no-mans land between 6 and 18 yard lines - getting a touch on the ball, saw the Parkgate striker's chip drop into the back of the net.

2-1

A disappointed Staveley then saw the result compounded by a third Parkgate goal from George Morley in the dying minutes.

FT: 3-1

Despite being at only 80% all afternoon, Staveley MWFC deserved to get at least a point out of the game it was just "one of those games" that fans all over the world have seen before and no doubt will again...

STAVELEY:
1 Tom Turner, 2 Nick Hague, 3 Wes Hill, 4 Pat Lindley, 5 Adam Jukes,
6 James Colliver, 7 Matt Thorpe, 8 Josh Scully, 9 Oli Ryan (12 Jack Woolley, 28), 10 Jamie Smith (14 Tom Meachin, 86), 11 Michael Trench
Subs not used: 15 Damms, 16 Townsend, Butt (GK)

Man of the Match: Adam Jukes - An impressive debut in the centre of defence.

Attendence: 89
