Steffan Jones will retire from professional cricket at the end of the current season to begin a career in teaching.

The 37-year-old fast bowler has been offered a three year player/coaching contract by Derbyshire but has opted to return to his family home in Somerset.

Jones (left) is currently enjoying his second spell at the County Ground after rejoining Derbyshire on loan from Somerset midway through the 2009 season, a move he made permanent during the following close season.

Jones has played 40 first-class matches for Derbyshire to date and a further 50 appearances in the limited overs forms of the game. His 123 first-class wickets for the Club have come at an average of 32.09.

In a 15 year professional career, Jones has represented Wales Minor Counties, Cambridge University, Northamptonshire and Kent as well as two spells with Somerset for whom he played 84 first-class matches and was capped in 2001.

Having received his County Cap in 2010, Jones will become an Honorary Life Member of Derbyshire County Cricket Club when he departs at the end of the season.

Jones said: "I am very grateful for the offer made by Derbyshire and I know they did everything they could to persuade me to stay.

"But the opportunity of being Head of Cricket at a prestigious school and returning back to my family home is too good for me to miss.

"Both my spells with Derbyshire have been unforgettable and I wish the Club every success going forward once my career here is over at the end of the season.

"I will of course be giving my all to the Club for the remainder of the current campaign starting with our massive derby match against Nottinghamshire Outlaws on Friday.

"We have a team capable of achieving this year and it would be great to bow out on a high with a successful conclusion to the season."

Derbyshire Chairman Chris Grant said: "Steffan continues to be a model professional and an excellent performer for Derbyshire. Everybody at the Club wishes him the very best for the future.

"Our young cricketers have learned a great deal from Steffan and his ultra-professional approach to the game. His new students could not wish for a better role model."
