Ross Whiteley has penned a three year contract with Derbyshire committing him to the Club until the conclusion of the 2014 season.

The 22-year-old all-rounder (left) is currently enjoying a run in the first team having been retained on summer contracts since graduating from the Academy in 2007.

Whiteley won the Second XI Player of the Year Award in 2008 and has since enhanced his reputation as a clean striker of the ball and a useful left-arm bowler.

In 2010, Whiteley hit the headlines locally with a sensational innings of 204 not out from 117 balls, a knock that included 18 fours and 18 sixes and remains the fourth highest in the history of the Derbyshire Premier League.

He showed promise during the 2011 pre-season tour of Barbados and was rewarded with a place in the first team squad.

An accomplished 33 in the recent LV = County Championship match against Glamorgan followed a succession of impressive cameos in the Friends Life t20 competition where Whiteley has made a habit of upping the tempo in the nick of time for the Falcons in recent matches.

Whiteley currently plays his club cricket for Swarkestone Cricket Club and was a star performer as Derbyshire's Second XI narrowly missed out on Twenty20 Finals Day recently.

He has been placed on a young player's performance pathway and will sit his Level 1 and Level 2 coaching badges as well as delivering a minimum of 20 hours coaching per year to Derbyshire's Academy and age group cricketers.

Head Coach Karl Krikken (left) said: "Ross has taken his first team opportunities well this season and he looks a very promising cricketer.

"As a player who can strike the ball very cleanly and swing it bowling left-arm, he can be a valuable commodity for us for years to come."

Chairman Chris Grant said: "Following the recent signing of Tom Knight on a long-term contract, this new deal for Ross is the next step as we implement the policy of backing our home grown players.

"Having patiently waited for his opportunity and earning his current place in the first team on merit, Ross is already a shining example of how we want our young players to develop. His career will now be given every opportunity to go from strength-to-strength."

Whiteley added: "I have enjoyed being part of the first team this season immensely and it is where I want to be for the rest of my career.

"To be given three full seasons to develop as a cricketer and to prove myself in the county game is a fantastic opportunity and I intend to grasp it with both hands."
