Staveley Take All Three Points In A Pulsating Local Derby. Match report

Report and Pics by Rob Waite

NCEL Premier Division
Staveley MWFC 3-2 Heanor Town
Inkersall Road, Saturday 3rd January 2015, 3pm

It was a pulsating Derbyshire derby fixture at Inkersall Road which saw both teams enjoying spells of domination as the game ebbed and flowed.

In-form striker Jahmal Smith treated the 316 spectators to a thrilling grand finale and climax as Staveley won 3-2 vs Heanor TownHowever, it was Staveley who had the extra reserves of resilience and stamina to see them over the finishing line right at the death, winning the game in the last minute of the scheduled ninety, as in-form striker Jahmal Smith (left), treated the 316 spectators to a thrilling grand finale and climax.

James 'Jas' Colliver's side, a combination of home grown U19, U21 players and astute signings, recorded their eleventh consecutive NCEL Premier Division win, to climb up into second place in the table.

Worksop Town lost away at mid table Garforth Town, while league leaders Tadcaster Albion were held to a draw at home against Bridlington Town. Shaw Lane Aquaforce moved up into third place, a point behind the Welfare by virtue of an away win at Maltby Main ... 0-11!

What a thrilling season this is turning out to be in the NCEL Premier Division - and what a great feeling it is to know that Staveley are up there among the pacesetters on merit.

Heanor had, perhaps, the better of the first half, despite Staveley starting well - and looked tight at the back as the home side tried to release the pacey Jahmal Smith through probing passes from both Kurtis Morley and Sam Finlaw.

Jordan Hodder spotted that the Lions' former Staveley keeper Ian Deakin was off of his line and tried his luck from long range, but alas, the diminutive midfielder's ingenuity wasn't complimented by his accuracy.

Ross Goodwin, the latest first team recruit from the Welfare's production line of young talent, made great strides forward after emerging from a midfield battle for possession and played the ball forward to Jahmal Smith, who showed good upper body strength to shrug off the close attentions of two defenders before getting his shot away under pressure, fortunately for Deakin, Smith's low drive was deflected wide of the left hand upright.

Finlaw played the ball out wide to the busy and industrious Jack Poulton who picked out Morley with his cross, but the young striker went to ground under a 50/50 challenge that was firm, but fair.

Heanor's Gary Ricketts, left his marker for dead and burst into the home side's penalty area from the left flank, but the ball wouldn't sit up right for him and his tame shot was easy meat for keeper Steve Hernandez.

But Ricketts was soon back in the thick of things, battling his way down the right wing before squaring the ball for Matt Richards who smashed the ball past Hernandez from 12 yards out to give the visitors the lead on 17 minutes.

0-1

At the other end, Staveley almost replied immediately - but Smith couldn't quite apply the finishing touch after Poulton and Hodder had combined to set up a half chance in a crowded Heanor goalmouth.

On 21 minutes, the breakthrough Staveley had been striving for duly arrived, when Smith latched on to a long pass from Sam Finlaw, beat the last defender for pace and drilled the ball just inside the left hand upright.

1-1

The goal fired Heanor up and they finished the half strongly, with Ricketts, Richards and the prolific Keiran Debrouwer keeping Hernandez and his back four busy (below).

The goal fired Heanor up and they finished the half strongly, with Ricketts, Richards and the prolific Keiran Debrouwer keeping Hernandez and his back four busy.

It wasn't long before they were back in front, when Coury Grantham ran onto a delicately weighted lob over the Welfare defence and left Hernandez clutching fresh air as he bulged the back of the net with 25 minutes gone.

1-2

Dan Booth swung a cross in from the left flank that hit Craig Fisher - who got his body behind it - Heanor appealing noisily for a penalty, leaving Staveley counting their blessings knowing that they had possibly got the rub of the green on this occasion.

Ricketts goal bound effort was blocked by Fisher and Hernandez had to back peddle and tip the ball behind to safety, when Richards got to the loose ball first.

Courey Grantham timed his run well to stay onside and homed in on goal, but Damo Magee rescued the situation with a great saving tackle.

Jack Poulton was booked for a crunching challenge that flattened Gary Ricketts just outside the Staveley area - but Debrouwer put the resultant free kick over the stand, as half time loomed with Heanor edging the game for the time being.

HT: 1-2

After the break, Staveley began to contain Heanor far better than they had done towards the end of the first half and really took the game to the visitors, on a pitch that had stood up well to the job thus far, but had started to cut up and become difficult, or to put it in horse racing parlance; the going was heavy!

Smith and Hodder were linking up well down the right flank, while down the middle Kurtis Morley was getting 'watched' closely by Ross Henshaw, while the referee Luke Watson was seemingly oblivious to the situation, Morley just dusted himself down and got on with the job in hand. Morley's progress this season has been quite remarkable.

Sam Finlaw was directing proceedings from midfield by this point and fully justified his 'Man of the Match' billing, where he was unanimously selected by all of the voting panel.Finlaw (left), was directing proceedings from midfield by this point and fully justified his 'Man of the Match' billing, where he was unanimously selected by all of the voting panel.

Hodder was putting in a great shift too, while Ellis Wall was popping up all over the Heanor half and making a real nuisance of himself.

Around the hour mark, Ian Deakin momentarily seemed to forget that he no longer plays for Staveley, when his poor clearance went straight to Morley, who knocked the ball into the path of Wall, but the Welfare substitute blazed his shot narrowly over the bar.

With 12 minutes remaining, hard working Staveley pulled level when Ross Goodwin's long pass down the right found Morley, who beat off two challenges and crossed for Wall who gleefully whacked the ball home. Wall deserved a goal for his efforts and Staveley certainly hadn't still deserved to be behind given their second half dominance.

2-2

Chris Shaw broke away from midfield and played the ball forward, while Fisher had to haul Ricketts down on the edge of the box to prevent a goal-scoring opportunity. Hernandez held on to the resultant free kick from Debrouwer.

It looked as though the game was heading for a draw, when a late flag pulled Morley up after he'd run through the Heanor back line in pursuit of a Finlaw through ball and Smith, uncharacteristically, missed a sitter from Poulton's cross.

In the final minute, Jack Watts knocked a great pass through the Heanor defence to Morley, who beat Deakin all ends up with a thumping shot that crashed back in to play off the base of the upright.

Having weathered a storm towards the end, the Heanor defence then contributed to their own downfall right at the death, as they hesitated - when a good whack up the field would have sufficed - and contrived to show enough of the ball to Smith to give him the opportunity to pounce, nick possession, charge towards the advancing Deakin and nonchalantly roll the ball past the exposed Lions keeper; almost in slow motion.

3-2

The celebrating Staveley players piled on Smith while Heanor heads visibly dropped.

Smith left the field during injury time,to rapturous applause, while Matt Hassett came on to help to pack out the defence. But there was no need in the end, because having been in front twice during the game, Jahmal Smith's decisive hammer blow had finished Heanor off.

FT: 3-2

After the game, Heanor's manager Glen Clarence was obviously gutted - but he was generous enough to praise Staveley's fitness level and the performance of Jahmal Smith in particular.
