NCEL Premier Division
Staveley MWFC 1-2 Maltby Main
Inkersall Road, Saturday 28th February 2015, 3pm

Staveley conceded two late goals and slumped to their third consecutive home defeat with a disappointing display against 16th place Maltby Main.Staveley conceded two late goals and slumped to their third consecutive home defeat with a disappointing display against 16th place Maltby Main.

In all honesty, this was a disjointed performance and in particular, there were too many poor quality balls by the home team in the final third. Staveley also failed to look after the ball and keep possession on too many occasions.

But credit must go to the visitors, who worked hard all afternoon and made the most of the few chances that they created.

Indeed Maltby may have taught the Staveley youngsters a valuable lesson because for all the home side's possession, and some fancy flicks, they created very few chances of note. However the visitors, despite not having as much possession, did the basics right and took all three points home.

James Colliver was forced into a number of changes due to injuries, suspensions and absence and Staveley gave a debut to striker Lee Whittington, signed from Worksop Parramore earlier in the week. James Colliver was forced into a number of changes due to injuries, suspensions and absence and Staveley gave a debut to striker Lee Whittington, (left), signed from Worksop Parramore earlier in the week.

There was also a place on the bench for the returning Ben Leonard. Maltby Main came into game on a run of four straight defeats but Colliver's match programme notes were prophetic when he predicted a "tough test both physically and mentally..."

Staveley started the game with purpose with Kurtis Morley prominent. The young striker saw an early shot blocked after a good turn and then saw another effort deflect off Maltby's Gary Hibbert and the ball looped up towards the goal - but with keeper Luke Herriott struggling, the ball landed the wrong side of the crossbar. Ross Goodwin was first to the resulting corner but saw his header go wide of the post.

Staveley took the lead after 16 minutes with a fine finish from Kurtis Morley for his seventh goal of the season.

Staveley took the lead after 16 minutes with a fine finish from Kurtis Morley for his 7th goal of the season

The move started when Ellis Wall blocked a clearance from Maltby full back Gary Hibbert. The rebound fell nicely to Wall who played a short pass to Lee Whittington who immediately moved the ball across to Morley. The young striker controlled the ball well, beat his defender and then produced a quality finish from just inside the box (above), that gave Luke Herriott no chance.

1-0

Sam Finlaw
, Staveley's Man of the Match (below), for the second game running, then placed a shot wide after a corner was only half-cleared.

Sam Finlaw, Staveley's Man of the Match for the second game running, then placed a shot wide after a corner was only half-cleared.

However, the home side failed to push on for the all important second goal. Instead, Maltby started to enjoy more possession, although Steve Hernandez in the Staveley goal was still largely a spectator and watched a shot from Maltby's Brett Bate go wide of his post just after the half hour mark.

Maltby's number 10 Luke Norbury was then booked for a poor foul on Brad Jones as Staveley's right back went round him on the touchline. The same player then fouled Jones five minutes later and but escaped a second yellow (and therefore a red card) and instead received a lecture from referee James Thornhill.

The referee then went on to book Sam Finlaw and Ellis Wall for similar fouls in the second half - showing the sort of inconsistency that is difficult for supporters to understand and accept.

In the final five minutes of the half, James Ashmore, Ellis Wall, Sam Finlaw and Brad Jones moved the ball around with great confidence for Staveley.

Whilst the football was pleasing on the eye, the only chance of note came when Lee Whittington nearly capitalised on a misplaced back header by a Maltby defender but saw his shot go over the cross bar.

HT: 1-0

The ball spent long periods in the middle of the pitch for much of the second half and there were few clear cut chances.

Steve Hernandez started to get more involved in the action and did well when he was able to get a hand to a dangerous cross and divert it away from the head of Brian Cusworth.

Maltby forward Luke Norbury then found himself with only James Colliver to beat - but Staveley's player-manager did enough to prevent the striker getting a shot on goal.

On the hour mark, Ellis Wall went on a mazy run beating three players and when he lost control of the ball, it fell to Ross Goodwin but his shot was comfortably saved by Herriott in the Maltby goal.

Maltby then had a penalty claim turn down after a long throw from Daniel Smith hit James Colliver on the side of the chest/arm. It was a let off as you do see such claims given on occasions.

Kurtis Morley then had a half chance with an overhead kick that went over the bar. Play moved down to the other end and Brian Cusworth was inches from getting on the end of a glancing header from Dean Smith.

On 81 minutes, Maltby scored the equaliser that they had been threatening, when the usually reliable Damian Magee missed a straight forward header in front of the penalty box and Maltby substitute Neil Spruse nipped in behind Magee and scored with a well-placed shot that beat Steve Hernandez's out-stretched right hand.

1-1

Lee Whittington then missed two decent chances to mark his debut with a goal.

Firstly he was set up by Kurtis Morley but his shot was turned over the bar by Luke Herriott.

Then on 90 minutes, a cross from James Colliver deceived Herriott who was relieved to see it come back off the crossbar, the rebound fell nicely to Whittington - but his close range shot was cleared off the line.

Play then went down the other end of the field and in the third minute of added time, Maltby's Daniel Smith appeared to be running the clock down by taking the ball towards the corner flag. He drew a challenge from Jack Poulton that gained the visitors a throw-in adjacent to the penalty area.

This was taken by Smith himself and his long throw was not cleared properly by the Staveley defence. The ball was then crossed to the far post where Brian Cusworth out-jumped Brad Jones and James Colliver to head home from close range.

FT: 1-2
