Toolstation NCE League Cup 4th Round
Albion Sports 2-3 Staveley MWFC

You may or may not remember on the 19th November 2014, that two goals from Jahmal Smith and one each from Kurtis Morley and Ellis Wall, gave Staveley Miners Welfare an unassailable four goal half time lead and was arguably, their best half of football this season in the NCEL League Cup Third round, away at Bottesford Town.

Their 'reward' for that devastating display was Wednesday's away tie at Albion Sports, which had been originally scheduled for January but was postponed following travel concerns caused by the snow that was due to fall.

That decision proved to be an inspired one as not only was it easier to get to Throstles Nest, the game was all the more better for it, although the game kicked off 15 minutes late due to traffic congestion on the Leeds ring road!

Staveley, in their third kit of orange socks, shorts and shirts, featured no less than nine players aged 21 and under in the squad of 15, with four of those having played their way into the HKL Under 21s league cup final only last week.

Young Chris Butt (left), deputised for the unwell Steven Hernandez in goal, Ross Goodwin took his customary place in midfield, with Alex Pugh, George Johnson and the man whose goal won that final place, Ryan Watters, all on the bench.

It only took four minutes for the first chance to arrive and it went the way of the men from Inkersall Road who were kicking towards the carpark. A quickly taken Jordan Eagers corner found its way to James Ashmore on the edge of the box, who saw his shot cleared off the line by Sam Bradley.

Both sides were looking to play and it was Albion who drew first blood, a neat passing move saw the ball recycled from right to left and Brice Tiani wriggled his way through to get a strike on goal which Chris Butt was equal to, diving to his right to palm the ball out for a corner.

From that corner, the aerial threat of Albion was evident and Sam Bradley rose in the crowded box to nod the home side into a 7th minute lead.

Undeterred, Staveley continued with their trademark passing game and with Jahmal Smith back from suspension, anything was possible.

Upon receiving the ball just inside the box after great battling from left back Jack Poulton and a pass from Ross Goodwin, Smith who had finally broken free of the attentions of Asif Hussain, fired a shot which cannoned off the arm of a defender, half-hearted appeals for a penalty were rightly waved away, as at point blank range, it would have been more than harsh.

It was Jordan Eagers this time who fed Jahmal Smith with a delightful clipped ball over the top, Smith turned this way and that but was crowded out before he could get his shot away.

Staveley were on top and it was surely just a matter of time before the equaliser came, Jordan Eagers with the tightest of space to work in danced past the challenges of two defenders on the byline and his cutback went agonisingly behind the right boot of Craig Fisher who had stayed up following a corner moments before.

It wasn't all Staveley though, in the 21st minute 17 year old Chris Butt produced a save that had to be seen to be believed when an Andrew Bailey effort from the edge of the box seemed to be destined for the top corner but flying high to his right Butt got a hand to it and tipped it over the crossbar.

After receiving some well-deserved acclaim from team mates, opposition, fans and officials alike, he picked himself up but could do nothing about the goal that unfortunately came from the resultant corner.

Albion crowded the box where it fell kindly to James Firth, who got his toe to the ball and steered it into the bottom right hand corner on 22 minutes.

Following a heavy and unpunished foul, Jack Poulton left the field of play with an achilles injury and was replaced by the very highly rated Alex Pugh for his third first team appearance of the season, taking his place in a re-jigged 3 man defence, with Brad Jones moving to the right side of midfield.

No further goals were added before half time but Jahmal Smith tested Aaron Brien in goal for Albion with a left footed shot whilst running across the box and Albion's Danny Facey fired a shot over the bar to make sure the hill Staveley had to climb wasn't a mountain.

Jordan Eagers took the game by the scruff of the neck after the interval and inspired Staveley Miners Welfare to one of the best second halves of football you're likely to see.

After beating one Sports player and 'megging' another, Eagers clipped a long raking pass from inside his own half with the outside of his right boot directly into the path of Jahmal Smith who didn't need to break stride to collect, Smith again turned the defence inside out but saw his shot saved.

After returning from a few games out with injury, Damien Magee was given a rest on 54 minutes and was replaced by Ryan Watters, whose introduction provided further evidence of the excellent work that Staveley's development side are doing with eight of the eleven now aged under 21.

Watters slotted in at right back with Brad Jones playing in his third position of the night moving over to left back and just four minutes later, they were back in the game.

Jahmal Smith powered through but saw his shot saved by keeper Aaron Brien but fortunately, the ball rebounded to Ross Goodwin, whose shot looped into the goal despite the best efforts of the stricken Brien who got something on the ball.

The 'young guns' swarmed forward in search of a deserved equaliser, Albion cleared after a 'Maradona-esque' run from Ryan Watters but they could do nothing about Jahmal Smith scoring his 13th of the season, in the 71st minute.

Jordan Eagers, with another inch perfect pass, found Man of the Match Ross Goodwin (left), who held the ball up well but couldn't fashion a chance for himself, thanks mainly to the close attentions of a few defenders.

Jahmal Smith went to his strike partners aid, took over the ball and passed it into the net off the left hand post, just eluding the despairing dive of the keeper.

The game was finally turned completely on its head with 10 minutes remaining.

After a period of topsy-turvy play where Chris Butt, Alex Pugh and Craig Fisher had to be on their game to stop some Albion half chances, the ball eventually made its way out to Brad Jones on the left, who clipped a ball from the byline for Ross Goodwin to nod home, without a thought for his own safety, very nearly clattering the post in the process.

It was now Albion that needed the equaliser - and even though they were now down to ten men following the dismissal of substitute Levi Maturine, they almost got it, from yet another goal mouth scramble, Chris Butt produced another world class save from point blank range and this time got the luck he deserved, when a shot from the rebound hit the crossbar and went over.

Despite the sides young age, they showed great maturity in the last few minutes trying to keep possession to wind the clock down, but still had chances to put the game to bed. Jordan Eagers' touch let him down for the first time in the night when through on goal with only the keeper to beat, he clipped a tame effort into the hands of the keeper - then Kurtis Morley, in trying to round that same keeper, showed him too much of the ball and he gathered it up.

Staveley had done enough though and from 2-0 down, played there way to a 2-3 win.

Staveley now face Division One side AFC Mansfield, managed by former Staveley boss, Rudy Funk, at home in the next round, which will be played on the 8th April.

It's NCEL league action before then though, in the shape of Pickering Town on Saturday 21st March at Inkersall Road. Kick off 3pm - with an away trip to Athersley Recreation the following Saturday.
