Staveley Through To FA Vase 3rd Round With Win At Charnock Richard.

Monday 21st November 2016

by Steven Hall

FA Vase Third Round
Charnock Richard 2-4 Staveley MWFC (AET)
Charter Lane Ground, Tuesday 15th November 2016, 8:15pm

The Trojans reward for victory over Pinxton in round 1 was a trip over the Pennines to face North West Counties Division One (equivalent to the division below Staveley) outfit, Charnock Richard.

The Trojans reward for victory over Pinxton in round 1 was a trip over the Pennines to face North West Counties Division One (equivalent to the division below Staveley) outfit, Charnock Richard.

The long trip would ordinarily mean Staveley fans and players alike would spend an enjoyable Saturday afternoon travelling, even stopping for bit of brunch, before making the trip down to the ground.

However, the weather put paid to that when the original Saturday fixture was postponed. Both clubs originally agreed to play the following Saturday - but the powers that be decided that it had to be played on a Tuesday evening, meaning Staveley made that same 107 mile journey up the worst motorways in the country at the worst possible time! Too late for any 'brunch-stop' and short time to stretch weary traveller legs before warm up and kick off!

Thankfully, the long haul wasn't quite as bad as expected and because of the agreed, later than usual kick off time of 8:15pm, everyone arrived in good time.

The other saving grace was the starting eleven was the same one that took to the field in the previous game - a 0-2 win away at AFC Mansfield.

The first five minutes gave an indication that this was going to be "some game" - and it didn't disappoint.

Inside that opening, Adam Lee closed down Charnock goalkeeper Gavin Bates whose clearance cannoned off Staveley's number nine, landing with Liam Nelthorpe whose pass down the line over on the right was well dealt with by Luke Gibson, who launched the ball over the top of the Staveley defence into Oliver Evans - but his shot across goal went wide of the far post.

Then Staveley had a decent chance when Ash Rawson swung in a cross from the right which was flicked wide by Damien Dashti just as Kurtis Morley was ready to pounce.

After ten minutes or so, the home side settled and set about Staveley who had an understandable "still on the bus" look about them - but at times they were guilty of overplaying, taking that extra pass when it wasn't needed.

The lively and pacey Oliver Evans passed into Daniel Smith who spun in the box and shot on the turn to which Lewis Naylor had to be at his best to flick over.

The resultant corner was headed against the underside of the crossbar but, a foul had already been given.

Nathan Fairhurst was then given the advantage after a foul and he danced this way and that before strangely, (as a shot on goal opened up for him), elected to pass left to Mark Adams and the chance went astray. As did an opportunity when Damian Dashti crossed from the right which eluded everyone in the box, just missing Mark Adams who stole in at the far post and Lewis Naylor got down well to turn a header round the post.

Staveley were dealt a blow in the twenty third minute when Tom Ellis suffered a reoccurrence of the injury that forced him to leave the field early in the previous game and, like then, he was replaced by Matthew Robinson.

Just after that, the Trojans started to get a foothold in the game as far as chances were concerned with Luke Rafferty heading just wide from a corner then Shaun Nesbitt was unlucky not to open the scoring when he got a touch to a high ball over the top of the defence, sending it past the onrushing keeper who'd come out to claim but missed it altogether and clattered Nesbitt in the process - but there wasn't enough power in the attempt and a covering defender cleared it as it trickled tantalisingly close to crossing the line.

The half ended at the other end though when Lewis Naylor came out to clear a long ball upfield but Oliver Evans got a touch to the ball and Naylor cleared him instead - and a penalty was awarded.

Naylor didn't have to redeem himself however as Ross O'Farrell sent the spot kick high into the night sky after clearing the crossbar by a good margin.

HT: Charnock Richard 0 - 0 Staveley MWFC

The second half took just four minutes to explode into life when Liam Nelthorpe hit a shot from range, Gavin Bates dived to make what should have been a comfortable save - but the ball bounced, spun off the surface and completely flummoxed him, ending up in the back of the net.

0-1

The lead was short lived though as Oliver Evans run and cross from the right was knocked behind for a corner by Ash Rawson and from that corner, Carl Grimshaw rose highest to nod in the equaliser just three minutes later.

1-1

The home sides change to a more direct style of play was causing the Trojans problems but the game really was anybody's at this point.

Just after the hour, Shaun Nesbitt's cross from deep out on the right hand side to Steve Carty at the back post was almost perfect, had Carty been two inches taller he would have almost certainly put the Trojans 1-2 up.

However, five minutes later Staveley were 2-1 down when Charnock's talismanic striker Carl Grimshaw rose to head home once again.

2-1

There was still a half an hour left to play though and these days, Staveley MWFC are built of sterner stuff, so that when things aren't going exactly to plan - they keep going.

Keep going they did and they were rewarded in the seventieth minute when Kurtis Morley, having dropped back into central midfield following the departure of Ash Rawson for Tyla Bell who went up front, collected the ball and, with the aid of a slip from Charnock's left back Ross O'Farrell, he found Shaun Nesbitt on the right handside of midfield. Nesbitt took advantage of the space left by O'Farrell and powered forward before unleashing a shot across Gavin Bates which arrowed into the left hand corner.

2-2

Adam Lee headed wide and Shaun Nesbitt saw a shot saved as Staveley went in search of a winner in normal time, however it was Lewis Naylor who ended ninety minutes as the hero as he smothered a shot from Carl Grimshaw who having been supplied by Oliver Evans, was one on one with Staveley's keeper and really should have won it for the home side.

FT (90 mins): Charnock Richard 2 - 2 Staveley

So into extra time it went and the Trojans took the lead almost straight away when Adam Lee held up the ball out on the left hand side of midfield, spun and pinged the ball right over to the opposite side of the field and into the path of Shaun Nesbitt who didn't need to break stride and slotted it under Gavin Bates.

2-3

Lewis Naylor had a few routine saves to make but Staveley were well in control now as the first half of extra time drew to a close.

ET HT: 2-3

Two minutes into the second period, the home side had one last chance to rescue the tie with a shot from the edge of the area which would have troubled Lewis Naylor but for a brilliant block from Steve Carty, who threw himself at the goalbound effort and deflected it to safety, where Kurtis Morley led a break out - which was aided by Charnock now having more forward thinking players on the field. Their defensive third opened up for Morley to stride forward unchecked - but keeper Gavin Bates saved his initial shot and his second seemed to be scooped off the line by the hands of a defender - but no penalty was given.

The Trojans passage into the next round, where tournament favourites South Shields await, was secured when again - with home players pressing for an equaliser - they broke with some brilliant one touch football.

Shaun Nesbitt found Tyla Bell, holding off a defender, he touched it back to Kurtis Morley who stabbed it left to Adam Lee who delightfully dinked it over a helpless Gavin Bates.

2-4

Shaun Nesbitt found Tyla Bell, holding off a defender, he touched it back to Kurtis Morley who stabbed it left to Adam Lee who delightfully dinked it over a helpless Gavin Bates.

A great goal to cap a fine performance - and the celebrations could begin (above)!
