Derbyshire 127-7 (20 overs), Yorkshire 128-2 (18 overs), Yorkshire won by 8 wickets.
Derbyshire signed off their T20 campaign with a defeat to Yorkshire Carnegie at the County Ground. Derbyshire posted 127-7 in their 20 overs and it simply wasn't enough to defeat the impressive Tykes.
Impressive batting from Andrew Gale (30), Joe Sayers (43) and Adam Lyth finished the game with 41 not out. Coupled with some excellent bowling from Ben Sanderson (4-21), his best T20 figures, Yorkshire defeated the Falcons at the third time of asking this season.
Derbyshire brought in 19 year old Alex Hughes for his first team debut. Yorkshire sprung a surprise by bringing England International, Tim Bresnan, who is vying for a place in the Test team that start their campaign against India on Thursday.
Derbyshire won the toss and elected to bat, knowing that they had performed well in two matches against the Tykes earlier this season. The pre match atmosphere had an element of resignation about it as both sides could not qualify for the Quarter Finals, indeed this was a battle for sixth place.
The Falcons lost their first wicket in the second over when Wes Durston was adjudged LBW to Bresnan for 10, although there was a slight suspicion that Durston had hit the ball onto his pad. Greg Smith followed in the fifth over, again LBW, this time to Sanderson for 3.
Martin Guptill (left) drove Wardlaw for a straight six in the seventh over and Derbyshire's momentum seemed to build.
Wayne Madsen reverse swept David Wainwright, the man who the Falcons briefly had on loan, for six.
Richard Pyrah spilled a difficult chance from his own bowling when Guptill was on 37. The New Zealander required lengthy treatment to his left thigh at the end of the over and subsequently, Greg Smith came on as Guptill's runner.
In the 15th over Madsen was caught by Adam Lyth from the bowling of Pyrah for 29 when the score was on 90, and the injured Guptill was clean bowled the very next ball for an impressive 46 from 39 balls. Guptill's innings contained four fours and one six. Chesney Hughes saw off the possible hat-trick.
The 16th over started with Chesney Hughes caught by Jonny Bairstow down the leg-side off the bowling of Sanderson for 2. The very next ball, Jon Clare was clean bowled by Sanderson and Derbyshire were in real trouble of not posting a decent score. On debut, Alex Hughes managed to defend the second possible hat-trick ball of the innings.
Ross Whiteley (left) and Alex Hughes managed to see Derbyshire to 109 before Whiteley was yorked by Sanderson for 12. Hughes and Steffan Jones, in his final T20 appearance, saw the Falcons through to 127-7 after the 20 overs.
Yorkshire's reply had a rapid start with Mark Turner's first over going for 18 and all from the bat of Andrew Gale. Derbyshire managed to remove Gale in the sixth over for 30, with Whiteley trapping the Tykes skipper LBW. Yorkshire at this stage were 52-1 and cruising.
Yorkshire reached the halfway stage 12 runs ahead of Derbyshire at the equivalent period. Derbyshire managed to grab a breakthrough with Joe Sayers LBW to Chesney Hughes in the 13th over for 43 from 38 balls with the score on 95-2.
The wicket of Sayers seemed to put almighty pressure on the Yorkshire batsmen and they struggled to get Steffan Jones and Chesney Hughes away.
Adam Lyth eased the pressure in the 19th over by smacking Jones four times over the boundary in five balls to win the game for Yorkshire.
Derbyshire's campaign finished with a bit of a whimper with three defeats in the last three matches for this young side.
Derbyshire’s Head of Cricket Karl Krikken (pictured left) was slightly disappointed but not too despondent of the course of the 16 matches in the T20 campaign.
"Yes it was a disappointing end to the campaign, we've only really played badly in three or four of the matches. We took games to the big sides and ran them close though.
"We have a really young side and we're trying to protect them. I hope the supporters take to them and all the young players and that they progress.
"You're going to have inconsistency with the young players but we've got some good young starts in Tom Knight, Alex Hughes and Ross Whiteley."
Krikken was quick to praise Yorkshire's youngsters, "Yorkshire are perhaps a couple of years ahead of us with their youth policy, and they are a very good side."
Derbyshire's progress now is in the County Championship and the 40 over campaign, "We're well in the competitions and it's a hope we play well in those to get something from the season."
Derbyshire injuries were a slight issue, "Whiteley is ok, he got a stiff elbow, but he'll be ok and Martin Guptill we hope will be fine for the next game, as for Dan Redfern it's going to be a longer period of time out of action I'm afraid. He'll have to go for a scan on his knee."
Krikken was reluctant to talk about the possibility of Paul Collingwood coming to Derbyshire, "I can't really say anything until a deal is done, there's nothing really to say on the issue at present."
