Wayne Madsen has signed a new three year contract with Derbyshire.

The 27-year-old batsman (pictured left) made his debut for the county midway through the 2009 season and he has since gone on to score over 3,664 runs in all competitions.

Madsen started his professional career in South Africa where he played 24 first-class games for a combination of Kwa-Zulu-Natal, the Dolphins and a solitary appearance for a South African Composite XI.

After starring in Second XI cricket during the first half of the 2009 campaign, Madsen made his Derbyshire debut against Gloucestershire in July of that year.

He broke the record for the highest score by a Derbyshire debutant with his second innings 170 not out and he has reached three figures on eight further occasions for the Club.

His overall first-class record for Derbyshire comprises 37 appearances, 2,365 runs and an average of 36.38.

In 2011 Madsen has enjoyed his best season in limited-overs cricket with a total of 794 runs, seven half-centuries and a List A average of 43.45 where he has also captained the side on four occasions.

Head Coach Karl Krikken said: "Wayne deserves this contract extension on the back of a very impressive record during the past two and a half seasons in all competitions.

"In 2011 he has shown the way in one-day cricket in particular with a string of impressive performances and he has also been an excellent leader during a short spell as captain of the limited-overs team."

Madsen said: "I am delighted to commit to Derbyshire for three years and very excited about the future of the Club.

"We have played some really good cricket in 2011 and I'm looking to help build on that with a young and exciting squad during the next few years.

"My wife and I have settled into the Derbyshire area very well and I am proud to be representing the county."

Chairman Chris Grant added: "Wayne has proven credentials in all formats of the game and we are delighted to have secured his services for a further three years.

"He will have a very positive influence in terms of aiding the development of our younger players and that is also very important."
